I live in an area surrounded on three sides by very tall trees. I have a discone mounted at about twenty feet which is as high as i can go but not higher then the trees. Not getting the range i had hoped to get. I realize im using 50 ft of cheep rs coax which im going to replace with lmr 400 when i get the money and from what i have read that should help some. Will my reception get better in the winter when the leaves are gone from the trees?

I can't answer that without knowing what frequency band(s) you want to monitor. If you want to listen to 800 MHz then the answer is probably yes but if you want to listen to 54 MHz then the answer is probably no. Replacing the 50-60% shielded Radio Shack coax with LMR-400 cable will do wonders toward reducing your feedline loss. If you can afford it then most definitely do it.
