Here's another frequency you might program in and I didn't even realize this frequency I'm about to mention was still used until I heard one of the C-5 aircraft using it about 2 months ago. I don't hear traffic on it too often but I keep it in my radio because sometimes I do. I'm up in the Fort Worth area but I heard one of the UHAUL callsign C-5 aircraft out of Kelly Air Force Base talking to CROSS COUNTRY. I'm not sure if the 433rd MAW C-5 squadron is still active or even if Kelly Air Force Base is part of the joint operations down there now? I think Kelly is still on its own and it does repairs for the large C-5 aircraft? But since they are being phased out for the C-17 aircraft, I don't really know a lot about what all is going on with those operations today. The frequency for CROSS COUNTRY, their command post, is 252.1.
If you are new to listening to military aviation, and if your scanner will allow you to program a custom search bank, you should program in 225 MHz - 380 MHz and let it search between those frequencies in the AM mode. Most of the Uniden scanners made since around 2004 have 10 custom search banks you can program in and I'd also recommend programming in 138 MHz - 144 MHz in the AM mode as well as 148 MHz - 149.975 MHz also in the AM mode. Since you have so many of the T-38 trainer aircraft down there, I would have to think that those two VHF frequency ranges would be hopping with T-38 squadron air-to-air type traffic. It's that way up here in North Texas with Shepherd Air Force Base not being far off and also other T-38 AETC squadrons from up in Oklahoma that fly down in North Texas a lot. They seem to have taken over the VHF military AM frequencies for the most part up here.
But those three search ranges would be good ones to set up on your scanner and search through in 25kHz steps. One way or the other, you're sure to catch some good stuff. I really need to update my San Antonio area confirmations since I haven't been able to do much listening down there over the last 20 years. Have fun!
