Been wondering for a while so now I ask -- in Baltimore City -- what is a "Squad Medic"? How is it different from a regular "Medic" or "Squad"?

The medics that are quartered with a Squad (ex: SQ47) are "Squad Medics". They were/are supposed to be staffed with personnel that are qualified to run on the squad company as well as the EMS unit. Also, their modules are all red in color (the regular medics are white over red cab & module) and they say "SPECIAL OPERATIONS COMMAND" "SQUAD MEDIC" on the side. http://www.bcfdrescueone.com/medic 47a.JPG

So is that like AA County where they have medics assigned to a station and if the engine or truck goes out first, they get on that and leave the medic unit behind - or- in another scenario, the squad and the medic go at the same time leaving the squad understaffed?

No -- they will not leave the medic unit and jump to the squad. The providers are (suppose to be) trained so that they can augment EMS operations during a special operations incident. But they are so busy, that this idea has not come to fruition, and it probably won't. So, for now they are just Medic units that have a different paint sceme.

They are, however, the only medic units in the city equipped with the AutoPulse mechanical chest compression devices along with EMS officers. And all squad medic are stationed with their respective squad company EXCEPT Squad Medic 47 which is stationed at Steadman Station because Squad 47's quarters is too small to accomodate a medic unit.

Thanks ocguard for jumping in. troymail, none of the cities around here cross-staff equipment. You come in in the morning and stay on the same unit for the shift. None of that "responding understaffed" stuff like the counties.
