Anybody know any good places/websites/discussion forums to get/exchange info on the Birmingham Public Safety radio system? I have been listening for over a year and cant seem to find any good discussions out there, or information about frequencies, etc. Does anybody know any places where discussions take place or any websites that have updated, accurate frequency/tag information? I can't seem to find anything, or much of anything.

Thanks!

Here is the reference page.

This website has tremendous resources.

Birmingham was the first agency I listened to in the early 70's. Back then the entire city was on one vhf freq. Then the 460 uhf went in service around 71.

There is another site I will send you a link called ScanBirmingham.

Good luck and take care,

Yeah, neither of those sites are completely accurate, scanbirmingham doesnt have much of anything listed about the new system. RadioReference is missing a bunch of tags that I have down. I dunno, I guess I am just suprised at the lack of "chatter" on message boards, etc, in reference to Birmingham's digital system. Makes me think I am missing some huge discussion board somewhere.

Maybe its just me listening - ha ha - I dunno. It sucks thought because I have tons of questions about coverage, problems picking up stuff, etc.

Could be that $500+ price-tag on digital scanners. Personally I'm waiting to see how
this "rebanding" thing plays-out before I spend that much on something that may become
as useless as my PRO-94!

William,

Pleeeease submit anything you find that you do not see in the database. That is the only way to keep the records updated with new talkgroups or other discoveries made by folks like you. Perhaps you have. If so, THANKS! If not, you will find a "Submit Info" button on the top of this page. I pasted a link too.

Once I get a digital scanner, I will want to listen when I travel to my old hometown.

Take care and happy scanning!

I don't have a digital scanner yet, but I have entered the frequencies into my PRO-94
as a Motorola Type II TRS. The talkgroup ID's display but of course the voice is digital
or "common air interface" or whatever.
I can tell you from watching both the Jefferson CO. & BHM. systems that talkgroups that
appear on the BHM. system also appear on the Jeff. CO. ststem although the reveres is isn't always the case. (except for Sheriff talkgroups). Hope this helps!

Julian has the right info. Ths Birmingham system has evolved a bit since the TG's were added, and is now missing good tags. If you have the time, please try to work out the tags and submit them to this site. I drive out of town a lot now, and don't get to listen as I much as I used to. (for a time I worked downtown Birmingham and had the time to listen and watch). Now I work on SCADA systems which carry me everywhere.
You will need a good digital scanner IE Uniden 396 or such. My BC 296D does a great job but is already oudated. Also keep in mind that both Jefferson County and Birmingham will be changing frequencies some time in the future, so the radio you choose should have the ability to be "upgraded" as the systems change.
Good Luck

Just remember if you listen in open mode you will have FD/.PD.Public service, street dept, garbage ,sewer, and what ever else can be tied up with the city. Its also the same way on Jefferson County. So find what you like and LO, the rest There are some pretty bad dead spots in the north end of the county also if you listen mobile Happy hunting

I put Birmingham in 3 banks. Bank 0 is Fire Department only (34 channels). Bank 1 is PD only (124 channels). Bank 2 is open. It works great for me. I always listen to the fire department and if I want to add the PD I just add Bank 1.
