Black Battery Pack vs Yellow Battery Pack

I own a Pro95 and use NiCad batterys and recharge em in the scanner (using the yellow battery pack). I have bought a seperate "intelligent" charger and NiMH batteries. I was wondering if I could continue to use the yellow battery pack ... and just not use the AC Adapter anymore. I know that the primary difference between the black one and the yellow one is that the black one won't charge if you plug the ac adapter in ... just as a "safety" feature in case you have non rechargable alkaline batteries. Is there any other difference? Would there be any other disadvantage to continue using the Yellow pack, but not using the AC adapter ever? the reason I ask, is because I can't find my black battery pack

It's fine. All I have for my Pro 93 is the yellow pack (for now). If you were sure you didn't want to charge the batteries in the scanner, but you might want to plug it up you could cover (or better yet remove) the extra tab the yellow pack has over the black. I looked at a black pack last week to compare, but I've already forgotten :lol: I'll stop by my RS this week and take a side by side pic of the holders for compairison.

The ONLY time you have to have any concerns is when you use the yellow pack WITH non-rechargable cells AND plug in the external power.

Eliminate any of the three variables and it will work fine.

IOW: (put in quoted block for ease of reading)

If you don't use non-rechargeble cells, you will be fine using either holder and the external power.

OR

If you don't use the Yellow holder, you will be fine using any type cells and external power.

OR

If you don't plug in external power, you will be fine using any type cells and either holder.

It's just like the triangle of fire. (Oxygen - Fuel - Heat/ignition). Eliminate any of the three and fire is not possible.

In this case, it's (non-rechargable - Ext.Power - Yellow-Holder). All three = BOOM! (or at least potential boom)

Hello, I'm new to this discussion group.

I stumbled across googling for information regarding the yellow battery pack vs. the black battery pack for a RadioShack Pro-79 I bought off Ebay recently.

It came with the yellow pack but not the black. According to your discussions I should be okay using regular non-rechargeable batteries in the yellow pack as long as I don't plug an external power source into the wall. Yes/No?

Yes, you're fine. You can use non-rechargeables in the yellow pack.

Go to your local radio shack to and have the mananger order you a black pack. It will cost you about $10.00 plus $3.50 for shipping.
