I've pretty much got my new 996xt programmed, and I'm noticing that the Black Forest CC in El Paso County never finds any TGIDs. Is it not used? I get three bars for reception on that site.

If not, I'll remove it from my site list.

Site 421 is certainly not the busiest in El Paso County but I logged about 120 TG's on it last week in a 2 hour period.

Welcome to RR also.

Hmmm ... ok. I'll keep the site programmed and see what I come up with.

Are you just listening for TGs or using Pro96Com to log?

I'm not using any software to listen or log (only to program). I've got a "system" with about seven "sites" programmed with the control channels as well as the alternates. I'm in "search" mode even though I have a lot of the TGs programmed that I'm interested in listening to (police/sheriff/ems/fire/search&rescue/DOT). That way the alpha tags will show me what I'm listening to. I just noticed that nothing ever seems to come up on the Black Forest CC even though I get 3 bars reception.

I see activity on:

Cedar Heights
Cheyenne Mountain
Austin Bluffs
Stanley Canyon
Airport (occasionally)
Calhan (occasionally)
Truckton
Templeton Gap

I'm finding A LOT has changed from 20 years ago when I was last into scanning. I've got a lot of learning to do ... like why the heck is Weld county broadcasting on the Cheyenne Mountain tower??? That's like 100+ miles away.

On the DTRS system all it takes is one Weld County radio visiting your area for training, vacation or just passing thru that affliates with an vola there you have Weld County traffic until he or she leaves.

RE: Black Forest Site

I was in Colorado Springs in the middle of July. When I was up I-25 from the Air Force Academy to all the way up to Palmer Lake and the county line, I used the Black Forest site on my Uniden 296 and 396.. It worked just great!

What puzzled me was that sittiing at the Palmer Lake picnic/playground, I could not get any Douglas Co sites. I would hear Douglas FD dispatches on their old conventional channel.151.115.

I don't believe anyone in El Paso monitors Douglas FD. Without any radios affiliating to the site, there won't be traffic. I've taken a drive down past the County Line and everything from Douglas County falls silent as soon as I move into Zone 4. I think that the Zones are somewhat isolated from each other as I have never heard El Paso Red on Westcreek.

That's interesting - I was looking at the coverage maps for sites and there really isn't much overlap into El Paso County for the Zone 1 sites. Westcreek has some and Franktown has some and maybe Silver Heights but that's it for being able to listen. All of the El Paso TG get denied by the Zone 1 sites so I will never be able to hear them up here:( I get Westcreek 100% here.

The limited range of the Zone 4 sites can be contrasted that to some of the towers in northern Colorado where I can here them loud and clear 90 miles away but can't hear an El Paso site much closer. Much different topography between me and Fort Collins than between me and Colorado Springs.
