Anyone know if there is any problem with signal interference from blackberries or cell phones. Whenever my wife receives or sends a message on her blackberry device, I get high pitched interference on my radio. Any severe consequences???

Thanks for your help.

I have a Blackberry 7250 and I have sent and received messages with my scanners (Pro-96 and 396T) and amateur HT nearby with no problems. Though, it wouldn't surprise me that such a problem can occur. What type of radio is receiving the interference?

I would caution operating any RF transmitter close to your scanning receiver. If too much RF is induced into the receiver final amplifier(s), it/they may fail to some degree causing degraded sensitivity, or worse. What you are hearing on the scanner's speaker is probably RFI being induced through the speaker circuit, but if the RF field is strong enough to do that, I would say that it is strong enough to risk receiver final amplifier damage.

If the Blackberry is on a TDMA system (Cingular, T-Mobile, etc.) it will cause interference to any audio device nearby - scanners, computer speakers, stereo systems. That's the nature of TDMA.

I know when I key up my nextel, or I power it on, it cracks out all of my radio's. Its just the nature of nextel's and there system.

Re Blackberry Interference

My PRO96 must be kept away from my 900Mhz GSM cellphone- because when the phone is switched on- the buzzing of the digital signal is quite horrendous when induced into the PRO96 if it is within about 3ft of the cellphone. The network polls the cellphone approximately every 20 or so minutes- even sooner when mobile as the phone moves between cells.

I must place the scanner on the opposite side of my body to the cellphone to minimise the interaction when carrying it on my belt. If interference occurs when using headphones with the PRO96- it can be very painful- as the buzzing is MUCH LOUDER than the intended signal. This occurs regardless of listening to VHF or UHF, P25 or analogue.
Interestingly, the cellphone does not seem to bother my Uniden UBCD396T.

GSM digital interference penetrates Audio equipment, wired telephones, PA systems and just about any electronics nearby. Such is the nature of rapidly pulsed digital signals.

I do not place blame on the PRO96- because the interference occurs on so many "appliances" around the home. It just pays to be very wary when using the cellphone in the shack.

I have also fried RF front ends by transmitting high power in close proximity to a receiver.
Best not to use a scanner to monitor yourself!!
