It's a good heads up. I know this is the marine forum but aircraft are following suit (same Satellite picks up both) and the older 121.5/243 Mhz ELTs are being phased out. Everything is now moving to the new 406Mhz system. I don't think ELT manufacturers are allowed to make any of the old 121.5/243 Mhz ELTs anymore, at least I read that somewhere.

We'll probably start seeing all the obsolete units showing up on eBay for the kids to play with!

Well not to sound mean but sucks to be them for not following the notices.

If they were to go down anytime after the satellite goes deaf to those 2 frequncies, the only people who would hear the ELT would be ATC or pilots monitoring guard and if they go down in a remote location...

That may be true, but would it be wise to buck the system at risk of a delayed rescue, or no rescue at all? That's almost like saying, "I refuse to call 911 in an emergency! I insist on calling the telephone operator, and having her call the fire/police, like it used to be!" Yes you can do that, but...

Still, the process is weird.

Would it not make more sense to:
1) Announce the shut down of the system
2) Prohibit manufacturing and importation
3) Prohibit new sales
4) Prohibit use
5) Decommission the system
. . . . in that order with about a year between each step? (Sort of like narrowbanding)

Oh I agree 100% with all your points, but your asking Government to do something in a logical, sensible manner. Would they even know where to begin? In the mean time, if my life depended on such devices, and systems, I'd attempt to comply 100%. You could fight it, but you might die trying. ;)

This only pertains to EPIRBs, not normal marine two-way radio equipment.

They did announce it...and the first message in this thread is pointing to a reminder of the fact.

Prohibiting things is a bit draconian and shouldn't really be necessary given the ample warning and reminders given about the beacons.

The system will still operate for the next two years so peoole still have plenty of time to update their equipment and register it.
