Bonus Find

[Pro-95]

So I'm out digging through the "collection" looking for odds and ends that *could* be used for some testing I want to do with antennas.

Then I stumble across a fairly large piece of pipe and deciede to dig it out. Turns out it is a 44' long telescoping mast! BONUS! So now I'll have something to put it on, whenever I figure out whatever it is I'm going to mount.

This should get me well above the 20' above roof most people are indicating in the reading I've been doing for outdoor antenna mounting.

Oddly enough this brought back memories of my childhood when I "helped" my grandfather put up his antenna on the roof for his ham station. Basically I played on the roof and got under foot while the three guys helped him raise his 60' beast.

hey do you think 20 ft of wire will get my attenna up to the tippiy top of my roof? and will that make it any better for me to pick up more frequnecies with it? :?:

I guess that all depends on how high your roof is. The higher you can get the antenna the more you will be able to pick up. I put mine up about 35ft and made a BIG difference over just the stock antenna.

I am pulling them in farther than that with my mobile antenna. I was receiving signals from a pd that is almost 70 miles away this morning
with no cloud cover.

My problem is that my house is in a low elevation area of town. I am at about 60 feet lower on the south side of town then I would be if I was on the north side. Kinda bummed me out when I checked the elevation of our new house and found out that we will only be about 7ft higher

Dubbin don't feel bad i am in a galley about 85 feet down. i just hope i aint wasting my money tommorow buying 2 more 10 foot wires and a splicer to bring home and i get to listen to the same thing i get now much of nothing. :evil:

Going out on a limb of newly acquired knowledge. The more splices/connections you have in a line the more loss you generate. In your case you need all the signal you can get, from your description. Splices could be creating a worse condition even if you could raise your antenna the 85 feet out of the gulley.

Now for the corrections on my statements.

actually my mistake i need a router or something to connect the wires all together.

Just get one wire the length that you need. Whatever you do though just do not start splicing wires together or you are going to run into the problems that Pro-95 stated (what kind of forum name is Pro-95 anyway :roll

I have a homemade broadband scanner ant that I put 50feet up in a tree near the house with RG 8/U cable, nuthin fancy and proper grounding and attention to lightning protection and watching for any electrical wires near by is a must!But with all that said and done, here at my location near Sandy Hook I can copy low band vhf and high band vhf clear out to the Delaware Watergap west (that would be acros the state of NJ)and north up to stony point near Bear Mountain NY state! (Rockland and Westchester Counties)so the ant speaks for itself and does a wonderful job.It also has really complimented the UHF and 800 meg bands as I can trunk track Suffolk County LI from here and pull in lots of UHF signals from the fringe too.So the bottom line here?the higher the better (in most cases) and use a decent cable on the ant also,you will be amazed at the improvement and the results for shure!As a side bar here ant preamps can be a usefull tool also if you want to copy signals in the fringe area :wink:
