What kind of book recommendations (preferably current publications 2010 - 2015) can you make for someone relatively new to HAM, who wants a reference book for basics as well as more advanced information?

I'm currently looking at a book called Amateur Radio Service: Part 97

Also, Ham and Shortwave Radio for the Electronics Hobbyist

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

I find the following to be pertinent and indispensable:

The ARRL Handbook for Radio Communications
The ARRL Antenna Book
ON4UN's Low-Band DXing

The ARRL Operating Manual is handy as well.

If you're not already, you might want to consider becoming a member of the ARRL which will allow you to access members only content such as past and current QST articles which I find helpful for certain projects such as antenna building ideas. Becoming a member will also allow you to download their digital magazine (QST) as well as receiving it in the mail.

I find some are adamantly opposed to the ARRL. I find their services useful.

Agree with all the above and would add that limiting yourself to the most recently published books will keep you away from some classics that have a depth of material that can expand your knowledge. In this category, consider the following:

Anything on antennas written by Bill Orr, W6SAI (SK) (multiple titles here)
Reflections: Transmission Lines and Antennas, M. Walter Maxwell
