I live in Westland (about 18 miles west of Downtown Detroit) and was wondering if I could receive the border patrol from the MPSCS system. Are the border patrol talkgroups normally active? Is there a frequency I could program in that is normally active?

I guess it would depend if the Border Patrol TG's were carried on your local towers. You can also find a resonable amount of activity on:

163.62500 MHz 131.8 PL APCO-25

I didn't realize that APCO-25 comms could also have a PL tone. Can someone verify?

While I personally do not enable the PL on 163.6250, the info I posted is per RR's Database. I questioned it myself several months back, and was told the information is correct. It is not necessary to use it however.

Here is the link:

PL tone on the APCO-25

Thinking about it, it may not be a bad idea to have a PL tone along with the APCO-25. May reduce some of the "noise" that can mess up the digital stream.

Now when I listen to the Border Patrol on my PRO-96, the modulation selected is FM. I do recieve some traffic. If I change that to MO, will I recieve more?

The PL would likely refer to the mixed mode operation where the user could swith to analog and access the repeater with a tone. You can't have a tone and digital at the same time. They are mutually exclusive.

That was what I thought. So by enabling the tone, wouldn't it actually exclude the APCO-25 comms?

As in RR Database said:
163.62500 BM 131.8 PL Primary APCO-25
So, more appropriately, this should be changed in the database to reflect two separate channels? One with a PL for analog and the other w/o a tone for APCO-25, right?

I haven't tried the freq with the tone enabled, but do hear them with p25. I also hear them very often on MPSCS especially around the train tunnels near Port Huron.
