To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Did an install on my Boston Whaler, Pulled out the old facia from the t top electronics box and made a new one. 2ea 05 heads, speakers and light switches for lighting on the t top. Under the console I installed the radio package, on rubber shock mounts and ran 2 power pole studs for power. All wiring ran inside the legs of the t top so the install was clean of external wiring. Also installed a Norco battery charge to keep thing topped off. Also 2 Shakespeare VHF gloss blank antennas. Wiring mess in the t top box has been redone. Tied up and neat. And yes everything is fused from the boats main battery switch and fuse box. The far radio now has the antenna coax connected.

The Whaler came from Clark County Fire Department NV. It was their river rescue vessel, hence the old cutouts in the old facia. Boat hauls ass 45mp on the water Mercury 200xl hp EFI. 2006 boat and motor only 426 hrs. As it sits in my drive. and yes the strobe and remote search lights work. Strobe will be coming off and 4ft open array radar antenna will take its place.

Nice. Sounds like a well spec'd out boat.

My dad had a 23' Grady White with a 225. It would go pretty good, but was a heavier boat (cuddy cabin), but it was durable. Used to take it out on SF bay. Only had a marine VHF, Loran C and eventually a GPS.

Grady's are nice boats, I have always wanted a Whaler. Funny it followed me home from Glendora on FATHER'S DAY, fancy that. 20ft Justice Build by Brunswick Government division of Whaler, it has the Red dot hull.

Something to consider, if those are the only VHF radios on the boat they need to be able to monitor CH 16 with a simple button push, do 25w max and be able to do 1 watt. I believe XTL radios are FCC part 80 certified but you might want to verify that. If the USCG inspects your boat and they don’t comply with basic marine radio functionality you will have a problem.

I use Motorola XTL and Harris XG-100 series radios on VHF marine supporting the USCG but they are secondary radios and if on the water there are dedicated VHF marine radios running and always monitoring ch 16.

No requirement to be able to.change to channel 16 with a single button push.

The USCG boarding team won't really do anything to check the radios. Many people on the water these days don't even have any marine radios onboard.

Going forward he will be fine with this setup.

The boat does have a regular marine VHF radio on it.

I can make the home button go to 16 on the control head.

They do and they have cited boaters. If you have a radio it must be working and compliant.

I like the install, did the 05 head bracket mess with the compass being metal or the magnet in the speaker? Picture of where you mounted the radio?
