I took some pictures today from the Volunteer Appreciation Day at Lord Botetourt High School. The command trailer as seen below has 2 UHF Kenwood's 2 VHF Kenwoods (TK 7180's) and 2 EF Johnson 800mhz radios and also a Ham Radio (Kenwood) plus a Low Band Kenwood for SIRS. State Police, Bedford, Roanoke County, Rockbridge/Lexington are programmed in. Also a Raytheon JPS Communications ACS-1000 for Interoperatbility. The units also has a telescoping camera, microwave, refrigerator, command room in back w/ radio room up front.

Nice interior set-up. If you have any other interior or exterior photos, could you let me know. I'd like to pass them along to a friend working on a very similar project.

Radio Interop gateway unit

I see another department bought an antique that belongs in a museum
for radio interoperability.

As I go around the country meeting people at different agencies, I see
more and more of the ACU-1000 units collecting dust. The comments I
always hear are they are hard to use and require a different plug in card
for every type of different device you need to connect to. If the card goes
bad, your SOL. Need to replace the card to get it working again.

There are other devices on the market that are easy to use, cost less and
are more up to date with the current state of the art. Have even seen one
unit that can connect multiple gateway devices together to allow sharing of
the radios connected to the different ports. Even allow multiple computers
to be connected via an IP connection that can monitor or control everything
going on. Even works over a satellite link.

The National Guard has taken delivery of 9 of these systems aready and
ordered another 17 more. The guard is even running video teleconferences
through the sat link.
