BOULDER - Police say one person drowned Sunday morning after his boat capsized in the Boulder Reservoir.

When crews arrived around 11:30 a.m., one of the two men who had been in the boat was out of the water. Boulder Police say it looks as if Randy Lucero had pulled his father, 69-year-old Jose Lucero of Lafayette, from the reservoir to the shore near the dam.

Both men were taken to Boulder Community Hospital. Jose Lucero was pronounced dead at the hospital. Randy Lucero, who is said to be in his 40s, does not have life-threatening injuries.

Gusty winds were reported around the time of the incident; the water temperature was in the low 50s. Boulder Police say the two men had life vests with them but were not wearing them.

The reservoir does not officially open until May 3, although boating and limited recreational activities are allowed during the off-season.

The last fatality at the reservoir occurred in August 2005. A swimmer suffered a heart attack during a triathlon.
