I just got the 500 and I am TOTALLY frustrated on programing it. I HAVE NEVER HAD PROBLEMS PROGRAMING. I have been listening to and owning scanners for over 25 yrs and this is the hardest one I have ever owned.
I want to be able to program in Marion County Indiana and listen to SW district...NW district...and the SAFE-T network.....and I got to listen the freaking metro city buses talk about throwing a drunk off the bus....HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP

Reset ("initialize") the scanner...
Download one of the programs...
Subscribe to the RR database...these steps should get you up and running very quickly for not to much money. These ain't your daddy's scanners.

Did you by chance read your instruction book? It makes it rather easy to program. The days of punching in a conventional frequency and listening are over.

The heap error has been discussed many times on here as well. I believe it means you have an orphan talkgroup that isn't assigned to a system or something along those lines. Some advice: Start small. Do some local conventional channels and poke around in the radio. Then maybe do a trunked system and add a handful of talkgroups. Work your way up so it's not so overwhelming. And a definite thumbs up on the programming software. All the popular programs come with fully functional free trials so give one a twirl.

programing help

One word. Software.

I can not imagine entering 1800 items by hand. That is extreme dedication and patience. Two that I do not have.

Software trials all have 30 free trials. That is 90-days of free programming. Subscribe to Radio reference. Makes it easy to program you machine when you prepare to go to grandma's house. You might even avoid the road with the big bad wolf.

Take the advice to program a few items by hand. Just to understand how it all works.

Good luck. DO NOT give up!!

dont kick yourself yet... become a Radioreference Premium Subscriber (pay for your membership) that will allow you to access and DOWNLOAD FREQ'S from the RR database, a regular non paying RR member does not have this priviledge... then download one of the free 30 day demo programming softwares (such as PSRedit500) and then use your USB cable to mate the scanner to your computer. Follow instructions for the USB cable, the programming software, and get familurized with the scanners owners manual. In the beginning, the software may appear to be overwelming... it only appears that way for a few minutes. You will take a closer look at the various screens, then go back and set your preferences and configurations. Then begin downloading from the database. There are many default settings on the screens which you will not have to even bother with. There are many things that appear complicated that don't even have to be touched, or tweaked until your satisfied that you know how to tweak them. I assure you, learning it will come quickly. You will never look back to program manually ever again once you familiarize yourself with the software. The software makes programming the radio fun again. Good luck.

Agree with the posts here. I got back into scanning after a number of years. Decided right off that to deal with the new stuff, especially the DMA stuff, that I needed to buck up & just figure a RR database subscription & software in my budget.

Now that I have, I can't believe how easy & efficient the Dynamic Memory Architecture is in the Uniden's.

SOFTWARE is your friend :D

(BTW, what do you race IndianaRacer?)

You don't 'download files' from this site, Indiana. What you do is use one of the 3 apps listed in the link, sign onto the web service, and download data into the app's editor.

Others may well have files that you can download, but that's a different thing from using your subscription to build your own files. 2 different things entirely. If you are looking for files, request them in the Indiana forum, and make sure you let folks know which app you are using. 73 Mike

Maybe scanning isn't for you afterall. The error you described, has been discussed MANY MANY TIMES and has even been addressed in this thread. Read and don't be so impatient, you might enjoy the hobby after you learn a thing or two about it.

Indiana,

Get software, read the OM often but certainly, do not give up. The scanner and it's abilities are outstanding. If set correctly, you can scan anything in the county simply by pressing a few buttons.

BTW, it took all of 10 min. to import and send to scanner the three items you listed in the first post.
