I used to be into scanning when I was younger (old Radioshack something of another back when the BRPD had a whopping 4 channels). After Gustav, I decided that I needed to get back into the game. (Plus I missed all of the action anyway!)

After much thought, it looks like I am going to purchase a Uniden BCD396T. I've done some reading, and it appears that I can join as a paying member here, then download some software, and then program it pretty easily. Am I correct? I am most interested in the BRPD, Fire, EBRSO, and State Police.

Looks like Scannermaster is the most reasonable on the web, or should I look at someone else? Is there someone locally that is competitive?

Thanks in advance, and look forward to hearing all the action shortly!

br scanner guru

you need to contact "br scanning" A.K.A. David Hitchner for anything related to BR scanning.
He is absolutely the authority on the BR area.
The Uniden BCD396T or the GRE PRS-500 will do what you want but they list for around $500.

Just to set the record straight, we (here at RR) do not supply software or provide software. We do provide the ability for software to download things directly from the database if the member (that is you) is a premium member. I can assure you, it is not necessary to have that ability, but it may make it easier. As a person who travels to Louisiana fairly often (I own property in LaPlace) I can tell you for what you have in the BR area (I used to work there) you can easily program the stuff there without the download capability or software. I will admit that software does make it easier and allows you to keep a backup of your setup.

Well, I got the scanner and did my best to figure out how to program the thing, but frankly, the instructions are worthless and the Uniden software is equally poor.

What I did, and I would advise others, download the Freescan software, and then join this as a premium member, and then use the Freescan software to download the frequencies from this site. I was able to program my scanner in about 10 minutes doing it this way, versus over 2 hours and no results with the manual and Uniden software.

I still don't have it all figured out, but at least I can hear the action now. Eventually I'll figure out how to separate the groups into different channel banks.
