Hi, I just purchased a Uniden Home Patrol 2 scanner. I live in zip code 08234 and was hoping to listen to some local police and EMS radio, just for fun. This scanner looked easy to use, so I went with it. Now I'm thinking I made the wrong choice...because I'm hearing literally nothing. I've got the Sentinel software installed, and created a favorites list...downloaded it onto the scanner. I've followed several YouTube videos (by ScannerMaster) while doing so, and I'm pretty confident that I did everything correctly. But yeah, nothing. Not even a peep.
So I've been at this for about 3 days, and I'm about to give up and call it a loss.

Any advice before doing so? One strange thing I will add, when I downloaded my favorites from Sentinel to the scanner, it went through the motions of downloading, but said I was downloading 0kb (even though the channels were listed).
Thanks,
Suzanna
From your description, that you created a Favorites list, but "0kb" downloaded suggests one or more of several things.
First, after you received your scanner, and installed Sentinel, did you update the database in Sentinel, as well as the scanner?
When you created a Favorites list, did you create it manually? Or by appending from the main database?
Also, check the service types. When the scanner is first shipped, as well as your initial installation of Sentinel, only the Dispatch service type is enabled for Public Safety agencies: Law Dispatch, Fire Dispatch, EMS Dispatch, and Multi Dispatch. You also need to enable the Tac & Talk service types, i.e. Law Talk, Fire Tac, EMS Tac, etc.
Are you using location control? If so, have you verified that your correct location, and desired range, is entered in Sentinel? Note that if you manually created your Favorites list, rather than appending, the location for your entries will be zero degrees for both latitude & longitude unless you manually entered that data as well as system frequency & talkgroup info. Zero-zero latitude/longitude is treated as off the Atlantic Coast of Africa, so the scanner treats that as out of range & those channels would not be sent the HP-2 & be scanned.

How it Works: Location, Location, Location
Using Sentinel, if you export your Favorites list to an *.hpe file, then post it, any number of us on the site could take a look & make suggestions. Note that to attach an hpe file to a post, you have to 'zip' it to a compressed file. Export your hpe file to a location on your PC that can easily be found.
Start Windows Explorer (called File Explorer in Windows 10) and go to where you saved the file.
<Right><Click> on your file.
You'll get a pop-up menu of choices for your next action.
Click on "Send To"
That brings out a smaller menu, with one of your choices being 'Send to a Compressed (zipped) folder'. That's the one you want.
That will leave you with two files-
One is your original hpe file, the other is the same file, but compressed (zipped). You can attach the zipped file to a post.
