Brimfield & Tallmadge may go with 800 MHZ.

Brimfield Twp in Portage County and the City of Tallmadge in Summit County are seriously looking into a joint dispatch center for safety forces. They would use an 800 Mhz system. Currently they each have VHF-Hi frequencies for police and fire.

They are NOT going to 800 MHz. They will remain on hi-band as TriComm (Tallmadge, Monroe Falls, & Mogadore) just upgraded the hi-band system a few years ago. If anything, they'll just add Brimfield to the dispatch queue. No big deal.

Currently, Brimfield's PD is dispatched by the Kent State University PD on 155.310/ 154.725, using a DPL of 411. BTW, the repeater is also shared with the Kent City PD.

There was an article in last week's Record Courier stating that indeed Brimfield and Tallmadge were looking into an 800 MHZ system to replace their OLD vhf system. The paper quoted the chief of Brimfield Police and Brimfield F.D. confirming the fact that they are looking into a joint 800 MHZ dispatch system with Tallmadge. That is my source for this post.

Someone obviously got mis-information. The current system in use for Tallmadge is fairly new (3-4 years old). The Brimfield system, I don't know about. I'd imagine it's fairly up to date since the repeaters are maintained by Kent PD.

Their current system is up to date for a VHF-Hi (read antiquated) system. Tallmadge and Brimfield have money to spend so they are looking into UPGRADING their current system. Changing to an 800 Mhz system will give them state of the art communications. It will be far superior to their current VHF-Hi system which has been in place for years. The City of Kent and K.S.U. PD are currently not part of the proposed system between Tallmadge and Brimfield. Thus, Kent and K.S.U. will keep their current VHF-Hi system.
The current radio frequency (155.310) for the Brimfield Police is extremely busy because it is shared with the Kent and K.S.U. P.D.'s. On Friday and Saturday nights (especially in the K.S.U. college party season) the radio traffic is almost non-stop. As for the Brimfield Fire Dept., their frequency is also shared with many other Portage County F.D.'s. It seems that the time may be right for an upgrade these systems.

All they need to do it acquire an additional hi-band frequency for PD & for FD if they choose and go from there. They don't NEED to purchase an entire new system.

The current system is still working just fine.

In other words, If it ain't broken, don't fix it.

I personally agree. And I don't want to have to buy a new 800 MHZ scanner to monitor Tallmadge and Brimfield.
However, if the money and desire is there, the superiority of an 800 MHZ system over a VHF-Hi sytem can't be disputed.
Many would argue that their current system is "broke" due to the officers and firefighters inabilty to get air time on the radio due to all the traffic from other agencies, etc.

I would be totally against Brimfield going together with Tallmadge on an 800 Mhz system because Brimfield rarely calls Tallmadge for mutual aid. Almost all mutual aid responses within Brimfield are made by near-by agencies in Portage County. Obviously, Brimfield needs the capability to communicate with surrounding agencies within Portage County. Furthermore, I believe that Brimfield PD cruisers are equipped with MDT's thru the Cuyahoga Falls PD MDT network, as are Kent City and possibly KSU cruisers as well.

You could put the frequency(ies) in your Pro-96, but all you will hear
is the buzz of computer data.
