Broward County System for FT Lauderdale and an STX???

I was wondering, i have a motorola STX (H35STC5170CN) and i want to get broward county put into it only on the receive end, no TX what so ever,
i was wondering how many channels does an STX of this model # hold and if it is possible to monitor the trunked system which is a Type II SmartZone system,

i have an old icom W2A and i monitor the conventional Frequencies for 800mhz on it, but i cant hold on the talk groups. but i dont care, i still get to monitor it,
if anyone can help me and knows anyone who can program this radio for me please let me know,

Bad idea... short of physically removing a module, the radio will affiliate with the system. More than likely you will end up with a stunned radio within a week or so. Sell the STX and buy a scanner. The STX is only capable of scanning 5 + 1 talkgroups and this is next to nothing on the Broward system. Also you cannot change the scan group members.
In this day an age putting a radio illegally onto a system is just a bad idea.
Also with rebanding the STX will not work when the freqs are reshuffled.

You can set the STX to affliate only on PTT, however there is no way of disabling PTT in the software. I'm sure you could take it apart and disable the PTT that way.

I don't think the STX's can be inhibited remotely like the XTS's and newer radio's can.

Not to mention that even if that radio is a Type II STX, you would still need the software, a RIB, the cable, and the system key to even think of programming it.

the STX was a good radio in its day, but for scanning its very outdated.

Yes, the STX can be inhibited... it just wasn't done as much in the old days... but once again understanding the Broward County area and the number of talkgroups I think you are wasting your time by trying to bring a a six talkgroup scanner into play here. As mentioned the cable, rib etc are required and despite what some of the home grown legal minds on here will tell you, using a system key to put an unauthorized radio on a system can result in someone getting arrested. Also you definitely need to revisit Floridas revised statute on having a a scanner/radio in a car, to avoid troubles. With scanners being available both used and new for little money and having scan lists and easy programming available, I can't see how you could lose.

So it's a Bad Idea to try and find someone to program the radio for me?...
the reason i got the STX was because i am too broke to get a scanner between rent in FT lauderdale jumping up like crazy every other month!
(Cant wait til season!!)
So what should i do with this situation?

is there no way that this radio would work for monitoring.
the only reason i wanted it for monitoring was for the higher RX Sensitivity Vs. a scanner...

the main problem is that the ones who hold the system key to enable programming of the trunked system probably wont program it.

the other reason, is as stated the STX is extremely limited in its scan ability.

You should be able to sell the STX and purchase a used older Trunk Tracker and have better results than you would with the STX. There is still a market for those and you should have no problem finding a buyer for it.

The Radio Shack Pro 94 and Pro 95 will scan the Broward County system real nice.

The Pro 94 is selling used for around 70 bucks or so. The Pro 95 is 125 I think at Radio Shack while supplies last.


Programing that STX is probaly going to cost you a heck of a lot more and may ruin the radio.

The stx will be able to scan the broward county primary and deerfield beach sites, but will not be able to scan the holywood site as it can not go above 858 if it is of the REL version, And also most stx's were type I privacy plus anyways. Do like Grem said and get a Scanner.

Or go a small step further, and get a 246T and you have almost the top of the line for around 250....
