• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

i have heard a doctors office use them and that is a issue, Especially if they broadcast a customers medical or SS# info over the air. Thats a major HIPA issue.

True. You might want to pay them a friendly visit and let them know that their communications are not private, and that private information should not be transmitted over FRS radios.

That would work, assuming you can figure out whatever tone squelch they may be using.

You're giving them too much credit. Seems most people just pick a channel and talk, no "privacy code" as they are usually called on those bubble pack radios, selected. lol

Agreed, since most don't read the instructions which are included.

Make sure you show up with an APX radio on the belt.

You have parents with kids using APX 8000's loaded with crypto keys on FRS I seriously doubt they are gonna send a team to shut down the supermarket.
Bought an APX6000 recently, & 1 zone was called FRS. All the channels in that zone. Never know when you have to communicate with one.

In the early 2,000's I saw a conductor on the NYC subway wearing an FRS radio on her belt, in addition to the standard issue Moto VHF HT. I reckon she and the motorman wanted to be able to say certain things to each other off the official railroad frequency.

Can schools use FRS/GMRS?

Yes. The only people not allowed to use FRS and GMRS are agents of foreign governments.

Like the poster said above, if a school or business or any other non-family group uses GMRS, each user has to get their own license. ($70)

`round about these parts what i hear as far as buisness use of FRS is mainly construction crews (mostly in the summer) and snow removal crews (in winter & early spring), which i can pick up from my pad no problem (five floors up). When i did my Dayton run last may i listened to FRS mainly to hear if any stors/schools/construction folks were using FRS, heard nothing, which i found kinda strange for a big city like Milwaukee or Chicago. Personally i kinda like hearing that kinda activity, as it means the service is getting used, and also it`s a great way for me to test out antennas on my ham radio & scanner :D. N9NRA
