BUYING a new digital scanner...help

ok guys ,,,i'm taking the plunge ,,,now that my radio shack pro 60 is obsolete i'm buying a new scanner when i go the the NASCAR race in Bristol this Aug.
i live in the niagara area so i won't be able to listen to the NRPD (corrupt force btw....) but i can listen to the ems, fire and opp. along with my racing radio's,,,my question to you all is,,,,whats the best and easiest to operater scanner?,,,,$$ is no problem......

Its up to you whether you want to go with a Uniden or Radio Shack scanner. I have a 296 (Uniden) for my digital needs. I love it. I cannot vouch for any Radio Shack digital scanners. The best thing to do is to get feedback from both Uniden and Radio Shack people on here.
I heard that Radio Shack's audio might be better but Unidens software might be better.... yada yada yada.

Uniden has a new scanner, the 396, check out their forums for info, I have heard good and bad things (good-batteries, ability to put in a huge # of groups batteries,, etc) bad, paint comes off, and the usual difficulties with first runs.

As for the cops, it doesnt bother me in the least what you say about them, it is a free country but keep in mind that there are a lot of cop friendly people here and many cops themselves and they sure as hell wont help you with comments like that.

There really is no such thing. Radio Shack SELLS scanners MADE by Uniden or GRE.

Absolutely, I like Radio Shack, and have spent thousands of dollars there. I was simply stating a fact that many people (not you) are not aware of.

I agree with EJB, if you have deep pockets, go for the BCD 396T.

I'm concerned that you want something easy. Are you going to learn
how to program it and understand how it works and use it to it's potential ?

.. or just throw money at someone and be at their mercy everytime something changes with trunk systems or talkgroups.

the comments that i made in my post about the NRPD,,,were not made in a unfriendly way ,,,,there are many documented and undocumented inproprieties that have happened in Niagara. they were made in response to the this groups need to be encripted,,,,,,

thanks for responding,,,,,i am looking for easy use ....because from what i've read about trunking systems ...it can be pretty tecnical and to spend a substancial amt. of $$$ i want to enjoy the scanner .....don't get me wrong i'm not adverse to learning,,,i welcome it ,,,,but i sure i will need help and there aren't alot of people close by ...(except forums like this) to help....i'm not a techy,,,,but a lover

You're really nitpicking, man.

I guess Lindsay should get rid of the Radio Shack scanner forum and add an additional forum named GRE Scanners.

Since they've got the Radio Shack name on the box and front of the scanner, I see no problem in calling them "Radio Shack Scanners".

And when was the last time anyone walked into a GRE store or GRE web page and purchased a scanner with any name on it.

The Pro-96/2096 is likely the easiest to program.

I cant speak for Radio Shack scanners but I know that once you get your feet wet scanners are pretty easy to program with software. I have both R/S and Uniden scanners and after a little bit of learning and software my 296 is prefectly set up to my liking.
Its best to learn as much as you can about your radios, they are an investment and if something goes wrong you can fix it.
With software you can save it and load it right away.
Make sure you get the ARC software, it makes things a hell of a lot easier.
Do not be intimdated by the radio you will be fine.

I would suggest to read the comparison threads in the other forums
and see which model seems more attractive to you.
You can also read peoples feedback and make an informed decision.
I wish I could buy now with the exchange rate the way it is. Guess I'll
have to work some more O/T.
