My sds100 runs flawless on the ARMER systemI hate to sound like a broken record..... but when someone posts a thread asking about which scanner he/she should buy to monitor the Minnesota ARMER system in his local area, I feel it is necessary to at least mention the Unication voice pagers. I know it's out of his price range but maybe he can find one in good used condition. My Unication G4 operates perfectly in the metro area with heavy simulcast conditions. I know it's not really a "scanner"..... it's a voice pager with some scanning capabilities, but if someone is simply looking to monitor the local Police and fire in their home area with simulcast, this IS the unit that will give the absolute best results. I know some people claim the SDS series of scanners work "pretty good" on simulcast systems, (I don't have one to say either way) but I know my Unication works "perfectly"...... and considering the Unication is actually cheaper (not by much) than the SDS100 it makes the decision a little easier.
I mention the Unication G4 simply because it works perfectly to monitor local Police and Fire on the ARMER system, especially in areas with heavy simulcast. If I was a new member on this site asking which scanner is best to monitor my local police and fire, and nobody even bothered to mention the Unication series of pagers, and I eventually ended up with an SDS (for example) instead...... only to find out later the Unication is the best, I would be a little disappointed that nobody even bothered to mention the Unication name when I was first asking which scanner is best on ARMER.
If you only want to monitor local Police and fire in your area, the Unication offers perfect results with great audio 99.8% of the time.
If you're looking to "scan" and monitor many different frequencies/talk groups, on many different systems all at the same time, then buy a traditional scanner.
Every time I hear a digital distortion, or weird audio on my Unication, it's because that is how the audio was actually broadcast. You'll know because you'll hear gabled audio, then you'll hear the dispatcher say "can you 10-9, you were garbled".... On the other hand, 99% of the time when you hear garbled audio on any other digital scanner, it's because the scanner can't handle the incoming signal properly, NOT because the audio was actually garbled.
My Unication works perfectly 99.8% of the time... even in heavy simulcast conditions. My Whistler and GRE work perfectly 40% of the time... Maybe.
For those that have an SDS100 or 200, how well does your scanner work in simulcat conditions here in the Twin Cities? I am curious because I don't own one. I've heard they're "better" but not "perfect"
Okay. I see you're located in Wadena..... Is there much simulcast up that way? Around here where I'm located there are many ARMER towers within just a few miles of each other. The Simulcast is real around here.My sds100 runs flawless on the ARMER system
Well I get voice drops but the sound is clear, you get the occasional garble, the closest Simulcast county is Morrison, I take it all over the state when I go for a drive.Okay. I was talking to a scanner dealer who lives in a metro area with heavy P25 simulcast (much like the twin cities) and he admitted to me that the SDS100 was better than the older scanners but it wasn't perfect. This is a guy who is a scanner dealer and he can use any scanner he wants to monitor the locals in his area. I originally contacted him about buying the Unication pager...... He really wouldn't talk bad about the Unication but he was also really trying to push the SDS100 on me. I eventually found out that he recently stopped selling the Unication pagers but had a bunch of SDS100's in stock. (go figure)
This is the first time I have asked specifcally how well SDS100 scanners operate on ARMER. However, I have read many other comments in the Minnesota forum, along with many other forums on this site and I don't recal anyone ever claiming their SDS100 was flawless on P25. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's possible for an SDS to operate flawlessly on ARMER, I just haven't read anyone claim that until now.
Does anyone in the south metro own an SDS? How well does it handle simulcast on ARMER
See, my Unication doesn't get any of that. Ever. And I live 100% of the time in heavy simulcast. The only time I hear garbled, or dropped voice is when that actually happened on the police radios. I hear exactly what the police hear. If it's flawed on my end, then it's flawed on their end, too. I can only count a small handful of times (maybe) the audio on my Unication was less than perfect strictly because the Unication itself caused the flaw.Well I get voice drops but the sound is clear, you get the occasional garble, the closest Simulcast county is Morrison, I take it all over the state when I go for a drive.
So does my R30.My sds100 runs flawless on the ARMER system
