I bought my mom a 2096 yesterday, the only one they had was obviously a return. The guy at the shack say every scanner that is returned has to go to Ft. Worth and get inspected. Is this true?

I was concerned b/c after I left yesterday she said some of her local PD freq's was "buzzing".

BTW she loves it, before her husband passed away they had a scanner. Win96 made it easy to program too!!!

I would say that if it was obvious to you that it had been returned, then they didn't send it back to Ft. Worth. I don't know what their policy on returns is, but if they sent all returned merchandise back to Ft. Worth, I would guess that Ft. Worth would inspect it, test it, and repackage it back to the same condition that it left the factory in. I wouldn't want to buy something that had been returned, and had missing packing, parts, paperwork, etc.

Yesterday when I went to get a 2096 they tried to give me the display and offered to double the warranty. It had a few scratches too.

The I asked for a discount--they said no.

I went to the another store and got one in the box. It is all there but had obviously been pawed thru. So far so good.

Sent back to Ft. Worthless for an inspection? What a load of garbage! Most RS are company stores, and in many cases, the manager's paycheck is based on profitablity of his or her store. What a financial and logistics nightmare for the store manager to UPS all the returns to Texas for "inspection"! When I worked at the Shack while a college student, returns were cleaned up and re-boxed. Sometimes, if it looked like it was used, it would go on a clearance table marked down a bit.
Of course, this was in the early 80's.

All the packaging was there, the stickys werent even placed on the bottom of the bracket the 2096 sits on. It had been used, b/c the box was rough and I could tell the bubble wrap had been off the radio.

But the hardware (mounting bracket, knobs, rubber washers were still in the original packaging. Not a scratch on the radio, all paperwork was there (instructions, etc.)

I Programed it using don's win96 (local TRS digital/analog mot ASTRO II)

I tested and listened with that radio right next to my 2096, they both scanned and sounded the exact same.

I think they sent it back somewhere, because all the extras were in new packaging, just like when I got my 2096 the week it came out. 8)

I guess I'm just worried b/c my mom said that 1 channel was "buzzing".(usually comes in clear for me) and she's closer...

Sounds like you might need to use the ATT on that channel. I got my 2053 which was there last one and was the display. they nocked off some from the price and doubled up on the warranty, never had to use the warrenty so it has been good so far.
