Some friends flew in this morning to BWI from Nashville, TN.
I had the scanner on 119.40 (BWI Tower) expecting to hear
the tower talking to the aircraft, a Southwest flight. Didn't
hear the tower talking to the plane. Why not? What freq
should I have been listening to? I was watching the progress
of the flight on a flight-follower web site - pretty cool.

Perhaps a stupid question but you were monitoring in AM and not FM correct?

A switch to the tower frequency may be as brief as:

Good morning Baltimore, Southwest 506 with you, 5 mile final runway 33L.
Southwest 506 BWI tower, number 2 behind company, cleared to land runway 33L
Cleared to land, number 2, SW 506

and then a quick toss over to ground control on the ground.

You may have missed the 15 second interchange. Best to have the approach freqs in as well.

Since you mentioned watching this on a flight monitoring website, those things are always on a delay. Once you see the flight online, it is long gone in reality.

Yep

Actually it was flight SW506. Well, I knew they were due in around 1118
and I started monitoring about 1045 or so. Thanks and I guess I just plain
missed the xmsns.
