Governor Newsom was recently filmed walking through a burned out LA neighborhood. A resident asked him what he was doing about the disaster. He held a cellphone up to his ear and said "Right now I am talking to the President." The resident asked him to put the phone on speaker so that she could hear. The governor responded that he tried to call the President 5 times but there was no cell service.

Question: If the governor of one of the largest, most strategically important states in the country does not have a satellite phone for communications in a disaster of epic proportions, that burned thousands of homes, killed 24+ people, and did +$150 billion in damages, then who does? Does the governor have a CTO? Does the CTO know about portable cellular stations? That for $100,000 you can purchase a portable, mobile cellular station? It has range of at least 2 miles and is equipped with a generator for power. It is loaded with satellite modems.

Enquiring minds want to know.

That phone he pulled out, may have been a decoy tactic, just to get away from pesky press, or neighborhood mom's who are desperate for answers. I Can't say I haven't pulled out my phone a few times, to get away from my ex, back in the day !

Yes, but when you're being filmed and state that "as we speak I am talking to the President" and then you collide with reality, you either look like a low-tech country bumpkin idiot, a sociopathic liar, or both. Would it not be more reassuring to Los Angelinos who are fraught with anxiety and fear to whip out a satellite phone and actually be speaking to the President rather than showing millions of people that at best you are a dufus?

You probably need to change the channel if that's the image you are getting out of this disaster. Focusing on what is wrong rather than the thousands of first responders that are there making a difference isn't helping anything other than boost ratings. It's a straight up insult to all the professionals that are on the ground.

But, hey, if it makes a political statement, that's all that matters, right?

Would it not be more reassuring to Los Angelinos who are fraught with anxiety and fear to whip out a satellite phone and actually be speaking to the President rather than showing millions of people that at best you are a dufus?

I've got satellite phones at work.
You don't "whip them out" and make a call. They are bulky. They have large antennas. They are not something that sits in your pocket waiting to ring. They have to be out with the antenna pointed up. Then they have to connect to the satellite and into the network. People don't like carrying them around. They are not a replacement for a cell phone. You've never used one, have you?

Resources are being used where it matters, not for making photo ops.

True, unless he was talking to T**** then a lie would have been normal. He probably did have Biden on that phone though, because Sat phones still are a handful to carry in your pocket.
