I'm going to be in Sac the first week of September on business, and I'm staying about a block from Cal Expo. Looks like the fair will be running at least the first few days I'm there. Is there lots of LE activity there? Typical fair crowd (lots of drunks) or more like gang issues?

I hadn't really considered this as a monitoring opportunity, but maybe I should dedicate a system to them. Also, if there's stuff that you'd like verified from close-in, I'll have a laptop and my 396, so I can run logging software.

Also, if anyone in Sac has decent restaurant recommendations, send me a PM. Also wouldn't mind freqs for the railroad museum (found their AAR channels, and a DPR 800 channel that appears to be used there, but if there's anything else, I'd love to have it).

Possible Cal Expo Freqx

Hi all, I was at Cal Expo on Opening Day and was in CC search and store mode with my 396. I picked up two freqs but haven't monitored them much.

458.8000
458.7250

I'm media, so I'll scan as I go out there. You can find GMRS stuff and fair admin stuff like ticket and fendor supply traffic. not too exciting. The midway is open til midnight on the weekends wo lets hope nothing bad happens with that.

Good Luck.

A 19-year-old man suffered a broken leg and pelvis Saturday night after fleeing officers at Cal Expo, who said he was trying to gain access to the State Fair while carrying a loaded handgun.

Jeremy Wade was hit by a car on westbound Exposition Boulevard after fleeing Cal Expo police officers on foot, said Brian May, Cal Expo deputy general manager.

The incident occurred at about 10:45 p.m. when Wade allegedly tried to enter the fair parking lot after the entrance gates had closed for the day.

May said officers told the suspect to leave the grounds, but he repeatedly refused, then resisted the officers’ efforts to turn him away. He finally ran across Exposition Boulevard near Heritage Lane, with officers pursuing by bicycle.

When Wade was struck by a car on westbound Exposition Boulevard, a loaded Beretta 9mm semiautomatic handgun popped loose from his clothing, May said. Exposition Boulevard was closed for about 45 minutes while medics prepared Wade for transport to UC Davis Medical Center. May said Wade will be arrested on suspicion of trespassing, resisting arrest and carrying a concealed weapon.

Heard Air1 and STAR talking on 132.125 about Cal Expo getting some new radio channels.

Expo1 and Expo2 will apparently be the alphatags, and they were talking about getting them programmed in the helo radios. They WILL be 800, but they didn't say if they are on C116 or if they'll be conventional channels. Anybody heard anything?

I'll ask the radio shop if I don't hear anything.

EXPO 1, EXPO 2 is correct from my inside source.

But nobody seems to know if trunked/conventional etc.
I'm thinking it's Conventional, I haven't heard a peep on the TRS.

It's State Property and controlled, guess I'll check lat/long search on FCC database, maybe something there.

I found those last November, I never heard anything on them. Watch out though, 859.7625 is a control channel for some CalTrans trunked system in the Bay Area, so don't get confused.

State Fair Cal Expo Police Freqs

I went to the fair on Saturday and used my 396 close call function. The Police are on 855.7125 with a PL of 167.9 input of 810.7125 PL 167.9 . The old freq of 453.150 PL 127.3 is being used by the Security officers and the sheriff explorers.

Who is the local law at the State Fair? CHP? DPR? Or is there a separate agency that does the state fair, and that's it?

There actually is a "State Fair Police." They are peace officers that patrol the property. Generally they are retired law enforcement, but some do double duty.

CHP

During very large events, such as the State Fair, officers and dispatchers from area agencies are employed by the State under off-duty status.

For example. The dispatchers are from various agencies, who are being paid off-duty by the State. The dispatchers are not being paid or on-duty, they are either taking time off or working on their days off.

If that's true, who are the guys wearing State Fair Police uniforms and patches?

I did a bit of Googling, and found that they do indeed have their own police force. I'd imagine it's a pretty dry job when there are no events going on at the fair.

Looking at Google Earth, the fairgrounds just don't look that big. We have a state-run fair here, and they use local law enforcement combined with security guards. Seems to work fine.

I misunderstood. The State Fair Police Dept is a STATE job, but not part of CHP. In 2004 it was recommended that State Fair PD fell under "Department of Public Safety and Homeland Security" for the State of California.

Here is a link to the Cal Expo Police Assoc.
