i just got a new bct15 for xmas an ordered the cable from scan control. its the USBSER1.HOW IN THE HELL DO YOU USE IT? I had a 895 trunktracker an bought the cable also from scan control. it plugged to the back of the scanner an a port an that was that. the cable that came with the bct15 is useless to me as i have no ports to plug the end to the back of my pc. the driver disc makes no sense since it will not give me any documentation how to hook it up even if i had the right cord.why would they advertise this cord to work when it won't.you hardware geeks are probably howling at this post, but software iam great at but hardware is a struggle for me.any help would mean a lot . thanks an happy new year, doug

So you have the cord that came with the scanner and the USB-1 cord from scan-control, if I read you right. Put the driver disk in your computer and install the driver for the cord that you got from scan-control. Hook up that cord to your USB port and let windows detect it. It will install a USB to Serial adapter and assign it a comm port number. Then hook up the cord that came with your scanner to the back of the scanner and the other end to the cord that you just put into the USB port. It will be pretty obvious where each plug goes as the ends are all different. Go to your control panel and find out what comm port number windows assingned to the USB to Serial adapter and use that in your control program.

Maybe you have a bad disk. Find the dirver on-line and download it and try installing.

I did a little poking around and see some threads in computer forums talking about things that generate that error message One) Fragmented HDD Two) If you are trying to install on your primary C:/ partition THAT PARTITION may be full. Try installing it on your D:/ drive, if you do indeed have multiple partitions like that . I will keep looking and let you know if I come up with anything else.

Also could you post exactly what ther error is, especially a number that looks something like 8x000ce0

No problem, it is like a Pit Bull with a leg in his mouth, a challenge.

How about that error code? Can you try the install again and write down what it is? Something like 8x00000ce0.

its the USBSER1.

The BCT-15 comes with a serial cable. The USBSER1 you bought from ScannerSoft is an adapter to allow a serial cable (like the one for the scanner) to be connected to a USB port (likely what your PC has). To use the USBSER1 you need to use the drivers from the disk it came with (unless Windows recognizes it automatically). The drivers need to be install BEFORE connecting the scanner cable to it.

The driver should be pretty much universal since all the USB-SERIAL cables use the same chip. Quite correct that the driver needs to be installed before connecting the cable.

I am not quite sure if I understand what you are saying here. The error message I am referring to is the one you got when trying to install the driver.

Are you saying that you did not get the error message when you tried to install the dirver that you got from the Uniden page?

Did it ever give you a number like I referred to?

I see that you said you copied the files to D:/ drive, and then burned them to a disc. Does that mean you have a C:/ partition and a D:/ partition on your hard-drive? If so, how about that situation of the C:/ partition being full that I posted above?

The DB9 connector I assume goes on the rear of the scanner from what the downloaded manual I have shows but, what kind of connector is on the other end that goes to the PC? my BCT15 is due to arrive Tuesday, and I want to try and be prepared when it gets here. Thanks!

The computer control cable that comes with the scanner goes into the proprietary little port on the front and has a DB9 to connect to your computer. Most computers now do not have that type of comm port so you need the Serial-USB converter to go from the DB9 on the end of the cable to the USB port on your computer. That is what the OP got with his control software and is trying to set up the driver for.

That is not correct. There are at least two major chip solutions, and each use their own drivers. You should not be loading the drivers from Uniden's d/l area for any cable other than the USB-1 from Uniden (or another cable that you have confirmed uses the PL2303 chipset). I have no idea what chipset the USBSER1 uses, but since it comes with its own driver CD, that is what you should be loading.

I see looking at the instructions on the ScanControl website for the USB cables that it indicates Prolfiic USB - Serial Comm Port is what you will be installing, which is the PL2303 chipset, basically the standard chip in most cables.

I did notice that in the XP instructions it tells you to plug in the cable first, let the hardware wizard come up and then put in the disc and direct it to the dirver. I said it the other way around earlier. Not sure what difference it may make but go with thier directions.
