Downloaded software to update my trunk tracker iv but I can,t use the cable that came with it on my laptop. Does anyone else have this problem ? What kind of cable do you use?

Please be more specific about your model. I suspect you mean one of the Uniden DMA scanners such as the BC396XT
As to your question - you will need a USB-serial cable, and there are several off the shelf models, besides the widely advertised USB-1 from Uniden that will work. This article from our wiki (links are always blue) has lots of information on this subject...

The trick in using these cables is making sure you get the most up to date drivers for your computer's OS (i.e. Windows 7 Professional, Win8.1, etc.)

Be very sure of your OS. The drivers for that system are not the same....and Win8 has some notable issues, some of which are detailed via links at the bottom of that article
