I am building a antenna for my scanner and can get enough wire in just about any gauge that i want so the question that i am asking is what is the difference between using cable from my antenna or using wire

Cable is shielded and usually low loss, wire is not either.
RG6 quad shield is what I would suggest.

The other side of that 'coin' is that if a wire is used, the whole length of that wire and the antenna on the end of it become the antenna. That can result in an increase in signal, but it can also result in a loss of signal too. Deals with resonant lengths of wire and multiples of that/those lengths. Lots of "if's" and "but's" in that, it's not definite one way or the other. I only know of one sure way of finding out which would be better. That's to try both and see. Not much help, huh?
