Today at about 1230 hours, I copied traffic on CAL-FIRE SCU Local Net that Chief 1600 was reopenning the Copernicus Lookout for the first time in 17 years. Sounded like news media was present, and COPTER 106 did a fly over to take pictures.

Can anyone share more information? Thank you.

It's been 3 years in the making with a lot of hard work.

The lookout has been completely rehab'd.

Many volunteers hauled LOTS of heavy pressure-treated lumber up there by hand. Lots of manual labor.

It will be staffed by trained volunteers (VIP) during red-flag conditions, during dry lightning conditions and high wind/low moisture conditions.

There isn't good cellphone coverage on the backside of the range, so having a lookout still makes sense.
