Hi there. The 396 will do the job, don't think the 246 will as I don't believe it does APCO digital.

I think your choices for portables are:
Uniden 396
RS Pro-96
GRE PSR 500.

I just recently got back into scanning after a long absense, I'm using a GRE PSR600 for Trunking, and a Pro 2006 for other stuff. Both are computer controlled, so I can run them/listen from anywhere.

246 is a great scanner but as smason has stated it is not digital and will not give you any of the APCO Digital. It does pick up the Analog APCO channels listed.

So no police for the 246....

The best scanner for APCO 25 as far a quality is concerned is definitely the GRE 500 etc. I have one .. but there is so little digital here in Edmonton, but a friend of mine has tested it in Calgary and it was no question. It is far superior to the Uniden products.

Personally .. of all the scanners i have, i like the 246 the best. But for digital obviously you are limited. The GRE does well for itself .. the same if not a little better than the Motorola radio that it was tested against.
