I just had access to some information on the conventional radio system used by Caltrans in every district except their districts 1 and 2 (northern CA north of about Willows). This is the best information I've come across for this agency in over 20 years. With the exception of District 7 (LA/Ventura Counties) each channel is labeled according to the area it is used in rather than identified by mountain top electronic site. I will need to cross reference each frequency with FCC licenses and the use area shown on the radio display to determine frequency use by electronic site. After doing this I will start posting threads and making RR database submissions one or two districts at a time.

I've already been able to solve a mystery about frequency use in the Indio to Blythe area that I've been trying to solve for almost 15 years. As I travel to the Phoenix area to visit family about once per year and observed Caltrans crews in that area using radios and was not receiving them, I was quite happy to come across this information. The information I received is about as official as can be obtained.

Stay tuned for further.

I frequently hear CALTRANS on 856.9875 here in Northern California. Don't know where this freq is from, but most calls seem to be in the bay area.

If you are hearing that in the Bay area it is most likely coming from the Mt. Diablo repeater. In the Bay area there are three repeaters using this frequency (frequency A in their system) and the tones are 110.9 for Mt. Diablo, 123.0 for Loma Prieta, and 131.8 for Mt St. Helena.

I really did not intend to begin a discussion of what people have been hearing in individual areas of the state as my future postings should provide quite a bit of information for all of Calif., except for Districts 1 and 2, which include all counties from Mendocino, Lake, Tehama, and Plumas up to the Oregon border. As I list each district in future posts it would be great to hear from folks about what they are hearing in their areas so we can verify the currency of the information I received, which was in effect, just "hot of the presses."

Now that I looked at your location it is fairly clear you are hearing the Loma Prieta repeater. It should be received clearly from the Monterey area if I remember my topography of that area correctly.

I can pick up Loma over in Soledad, but Loma covers Santa Cruz County. Mt. Toro is for Monterey area

Your timing is fantastic. I've been working on the CalTrans stuff for San Luis Obispo/Santa Barbara counties for the last two days. I'm anxiously awaiting your info!

Yeah, I can seen Loma Prieta from my house so I'm sure that is what it is...however, I never hear CALTRANS in the Monterey Bay, it is always calls over in the San Jose to Oakland area. Anyways, sorry if my post didn't add much to your thread...I thought you were looking for frequencies to add to the ones you already had and was providing the one that I hear stuff frequently on.

Feel free to use my web spreadsheet, it may be of help. here

I haven't updated it in a while but it should still be fairly accurate. PM me if you'd like the original.

Wayne - nice formatting. You might want to update it, though. Several of the applications for news/mods have long since been disposed. File number 0000992891 was dismissed more than 3 years ago.

Good point. For me, it is far more important to know where the CalTrans units are using a frequency than where a listener is hearing it. For example, many of the sites in the Sierra are very strong on the west side of the central valley but they are located 50+ miles away. I'd rather know that 858.7375 is used in the Emigrant Gap area than know that someone can hear it in Woodland. Having the repeater's CTCSS output is valuable, too, as several systems can often be heard on the same freq in the same area.

There is only one license on 857.2625 in Monterey County and it is located at CTF. In Monterey County at least, there is no CalTrans on 857.2625. This is probably an error in Wayne's spreadsheet.

When I get some time I'll update the information.
