Can 396 & 996 share a config/systems file?

hey guys,

I spent a considerable amount of time programming additional trunk systems into my 996 with alpha tags, etc. I want to duplicate these systems into my 396 without needing to do it manually again, i.e., when I say manually, I mean through each units separate Uniden software.

Anyone know if/how I can share the 996 config info (only the systems, talkgroups, alpha tags, etc) with the 396 or easily import those systems into the 396?

thanks

Yes, you can share the SYSTEM files (NOT CONFIGURATION) files, with minor caution. I'm using USAD for both--don't know about how Butel software would have to be manipulated. I have no significant issues editing all my changes using exclusively USAD 996 and then programming the 396 with USAD 396 (to ensure proper system configuration)--the 396 ignores or attempts to interpret the 996 data superset. You can point to the same location in settings for the system files. You can also just copy 996 system files to the 396 system files repository, but that would duplicate storage ... Note that there are some things that won't work the same, due to scanner differences: all vs digital vs analog (if you have grayed out CTCSS with ALL on the 996, the 396 will interpret it as CTCSS with that grayed out tone), multiple trunking sites (the 396 will take the first site you've defined and ignore the rest). If you look directly at the USD data files, you can see the differences at the end of each record. BACKUP any existing data files first, then try it out.

using the Butel ARC396 and ARC996, I found a few issues with trunked systems. I had the 396T first so I wanted to dump all info to the 996T. I used ARC996 Pro to import all the files from ARC396 Pro. all seemed ok but I noticed I didn't heat the local P25 trunked system while running both scanners at the same time. when I looked at the system in ARC996 Pro, it uses sites. so, if there are multiple sites for a system, you don't just put the CC in for the system, you add the CC for each site. you can lock out or assign a QK for each site. what's strange is, other systems imported just fine. I think I may play with the Uniden software more to see if it will allow me to copy systems over easier.

Change the BCD396T software to point to the BCD996T systems folder. That will make all of the systems common between both. They will import just fine into a BCD396T, however you'll lose any location data.

In UASD, under 'Setup' > 'Setup Options' > 'Data Base'
change the 'System Database Folder' to:

C:\My Documents\UASD_DataBase\BCD996T\UASD_systems

I did that with the Butel software, but I want to keep the software files separate since the 996 is staying on my desk at home. I have different systems programmed in both but some are the same.

Then use slightly different names for the files that are geared towards one scanner or another. For example, I prefer different setups on some of my Raailroad groups in the car as I can hear more rail operations on the road than at home. I use the same basic setup but the files geared towards the radio in my vehicle are appended with a "v". (railroadv.m96)

Thanks for the idea, now I know how my home computer and my traveling computer can always sync files for my 396
