• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I find the W9 head too big for my application. Can I swap it out/reprogram it with a W4 or other smaller head?
If the answer is yes, what steps are necessary?
Thanks.

It would be smart to lend a hand instead of attacking me, not everyone has to be a show off and radio guru of the world you know.

To the OP: It can be done, I don't know the details. I'd suggest you try the batboard. There's a focused discussion group on these radios that is only visible to logged in members.

Yes, you need to shove an S record in it from a similar radio type (power, band, etc...) but from a W4 setup. To do so you need lab software. As the others have said, search batlabs for the answers. It's best to use the Google search feature instead of the board search feature since they are having a few issues with the bat board search right now.

It's not necessary to respond to many of the threads on the board to give an answer based on a search you did. I'm sorry but this isn't Walmart and we don't need a greeter. If I asked a question I would prefer to either get no answer or an answer from someone experienced in the topic. Commercial radio is a much more complicated subject than scanner discussion. Giving the wrong advice in these forums could cost someone a lot of money.

The the OP: if you have an XTL-5000 you can change the head by simply telling the CPS software which head you want to use. With older radios such as the ASTRO Spectra you'll have to follow mancow's advice.

Remember to write your tuning values down as well.

BTW, Thanks Wayne!

Ok, thanks for the info.
I now know I need an S record and should write down my tuning values.
And I need lab software.
Can anyone help with the S record for a Astro Spectra VHF?
