Can any of you scan Joplin?

I just got a 396xt to try scanning Joplin's P25 system and have had nothing but problems. The problem is that I only hear half the conversation. I mainly hear the mobile units but usually can't hear the dispatcher (even though I know they're transmitting because I see their UID come up when they Tx.

I've had people look at all my freescan settings, double check my settings, and give me things to try, and nothing has worked. So I'm curious if anyone has recently scanned their system. The reason I ask is because I did come across a thread where someone had a similar problem on a Mot II/P25 system (which I beleive is what joplin is) using a 396xt, and appearently Uniden's response was that system could not be scanned, so I'm wondering if anyone around Joplin has been able to scan them properly, and if so, what you're using. I understand it was recently rebanded and I'm wondering if they made any other modifications to the system besides just the rebanding.

According to the FCC database, Joplin has two transmitter locations that broadcast simultaneously. Site 1 is located near RT 60 & Schifferdecker and the freq's assigned there are:
851.0125
851.2500
851.7500
852.2500
852.7500
856.4875
857.4875
858.0125
858.4875
859.4875
Site 2 is located at 303 E. 3rd St. and the freq's assigned there are:
851.5125
856.4875
857.4875
858.0125
858.4875
859.4875

This means you would need to set up a multi-site system in your 396xt and only scan which ever one you receive the strongest signal from.
I hope this helps.

You sir may just be the answer to my prayers! : ) I'm not where I can look at the radio right now, but multi-site or multicasting systems seems to be the common denominator for people experiencing similar problems as mine. Do I need to do something special when setting up the system, or do I simply add another site to the existing system and make sure the freqs belong to the appropriate site?

Yes, just set up one system with two sites and assign different SQKey numbers so you can easily turn off one or the other as needed. You should be receiving two different control channel freq's and if you are please post them here for everyone else. The R/R Database for Joplin needs to be updated.

Don't program 851.0125 or 851.5125 in. Those are 800Mhz mutual aid channels that are conventional. They should not be part of the trunking system

Hmm.... Well a quick google search seems to confirm these are mutual-aid freqs, but if I omitted them, then the frequencies for the two different joplin sites would be the same, one would just have a few more than the other. Does this still sound right? Will the scanner still be able to differentiate between the sites if programmed this way? I won't be near the scanner for a while or I'd just try it and see if it works.

I have a FreeScan file for Joplin's P25 system that I can email you to see if that works. I have no problem monitoring them, except for the encryption they started using a while back. Below is a CSV export from FreeScan showing how I have the system setup. If I can help any further please let me know.

Regards,
Paul

Well after seeing Steener's comment about their use of encryption, and after going and changing my display modes, there it was. ENC. I'd been using mode 3 because I want to see the UID's, but appearently it doesn't show ENC in mode 3.

So anyway, Joplin dispatch and a few other units are definately encrypted. Kinda blows because Joplin was the biggest reason I bought my XT. And not just to listen to them Firefighters : )

IDK if there's a way to notate that on the RadioReference page for Joplin, MO but it would be really helpful if an Admin or someone could because it would have saved me a lot of time, sleep, and pepto bismal.
