I was able to pick them up on Fri night / Sat Morning, now I can't pick them up. Can anyone else hear them?

It now seems as they've enrypted signals... Is anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks..

I'm in Verona. Next town over from Montclair. I have a BC 780XLT. I can't hear a thing except the Digital Control channel.

Any ideas?

Montclair is tough to hear even in Montclair. They have the ability to encrypt, but as of now, they are still in the clear.I'm in Verona as well, using a BC796, and a BC996, and both are picking up Montclair loud and clear. Also the Fire department is still using their old conventional frequencies most of the time. They were using the digital system earlier in the week, but are now back to their old one again. Not sure what the reason is.

That's odd. When I was in downtwon Newark last Monday, I was able to pick up Montclair - digital and in the clear. At least I'm 95 percent certain it was Montclair (not being in North Jersey full time doesn't help). I seemed to have fewer problems picking up Montclair on my 396 from Broad St Station in Newark than I do listening to Philadelphia PD or FD in parts of Philadelphia proper (usually the signal is worst in parts of West Philadelphia on that system).

You don't have a digital scanner. All you will be able to hear off of a digital system (or even a digital TG on a mixed-mode Moto TRS) on a 780 is the control channel or some other type of digital "noise".

From Newark, it had to be. There's no other digital 500 MHz system anywhere near that area...

Kearny Police is NOT trunked but there key stone cops are P25 fully encrypted 24/7
for there blocked drive way calls. Fire and EMs are still Analog.

Thanks guys. Should I get a Digital Scanner? What happens if Montclair goes to full time encryption? I won't be able to listen to them, correct?

Buying a digital scanner is totally up to you. I bought one because my work travels take me all over NJ, and there is quite a lot of digital that's not encrypted to listen to (Burlington County is always my main example).

And yes, if they go full encryption, you won't hear anything anymore...
