Hi, I am wondering if my Uniden BC346XT Trunk Tracker III can pick up the Contra Costa County's new radio. I was able to program it when it was still on the old system.

Thanks

No, Contra Costa County is now on EBRCS, a digital 700 MHz trunked system. The BC346XT is an analog scanner. You will need a digital capable scanner in order to follow this system.

Thank you very much for your response. Do you have any recommendation for a handheld radio that is able to pick up the new system?

Thanks

There aren't too many choices when it comes to handheld digital scanners. Currently in production is the Uniden BCD396XT. The GRE PSR-500/RS Pro-106 and PSR-800 are options but supplies are limited as GRE has ceased production. As to which scanner works better, that has been debated in various forums.

Is it worth getting a Phase I radio now, or is CoCo likely to move to Phase II anytime soon?

I don't think anyone knows if or when CoCo will switch to P25 Phase II. Since not all users, especially Newark PD and Alameda County Fire, have transitioned to EBRCS, I doubt they will complicate matters by switching to Phase II. This is all speculation on my part but it seems logical. Based on the current pace, it'll be a long while.

If you want to continue listening, you'll need a digital scanner. If you are patient enough, then you can wait for the next Phase II scanner to come out.

Thanks. I ended up ordering a PRO-106 on Amazon for $300. I'll add it to my PRO-95 and PRO-164.
