I have my shortwave on my 1st floor. I used my telescoping scanner antenna, and connected it to the receiver. Then connected a longwire off the top of the antenna, and it's about 23ft long. I have a CB on my 2nd floor, and my shortwave radio picks it up fine. Nice & clear.

When I try tuning into one of the many time freqs. I hear static on AM mode. If I switch to USB/LSB mode I hear a steady beeping.

Any ideas?

you'll have to be more specific about which time stations you're trying to hear. CHU uses a steady beeping sound for each second, and if memory serves, is in suppressed carrier sideband mode - which means you may not hear it too clearly in AM, but will in sideband.

Many radios are slightly more sensitive in sideband than in AM mode; it's a fact many top DXers use to spot activity that would normally otherwise be missed.

Do you have something around you that uses a steady clock pulse - like a timer for a fish heater, for example? That may also be a source of what you are hearing.

Like I said, more specifics, please. 73s Mike

I tried these:

2500 khz, 5000 khz, 7500 khz, 10000 khz and 15000 khz

In AM mode I hear a static/steady sound. If I switch to USB/LSB it's a steady beeping type of sound. USB and LSB are the same sound.

I have a atomic clock in my kitchen. Would it be picking that up?

Hmm...not sure what's on 7500, but the others are WWV frequencies, and there, yes, all you will hear is a beeping if you are listening in USB or LSB. Also not sure what you were expecting to hear? But if you are hearing WWV, chances are the radio - whatever it is - is working. I doubt that you would hear the 'atomic' clock (kind of a misnomer - there's nothing nuclear about the clock - it's just picking up the WWVB time signals, which runs off a cesium based device...)

There's a great deal more to hear than CB and time stations. You can find out more about what's on by using the links in our Wiki. It sounds like your radio is working just fine, at least from the sound (pardon the pun) of it. 73s Mike

Ok Mike thanks.

I listen to USCG a lot in the mornings, and they say CH22 or 267khz for weather reports,etc...

I tuned into this, and never heard anything. Do you have some freqs that will work in my area, and good times to tune in?

Also....I have tried these antennas:

CB Magnet mount antenna.
Scanner telescoping antenna.
Long wire.

All of these seem to pickup the CB freqs, and the time freqs on USB mode.

The scanner telescoping antenna connects to the back of my DX300. Which is nice. Would this work with the lower freqs? I mean it works for the time freqs....

Try 5.696 in the mornings for USCG. You didnt mention make and mod of SW radio. Some of these radios are toys. Even with sideband they are not good receivers. Transmitting on 27 mHz with receive antenna close by is dangerous. Could blow out RF [front end] of SW. Post more info.

Ok I try that freq in the morning. My unit is a Realistic DX300. This is my first unit. My CB unit isn't near my DX300 at all.
