I know that cell phones could cause brain cancer. What about scanners? If you're holding a scanner in front of you the transmittion has to go through you for your scanner to receive it. Could that have any health effects?

As with anything that is transmitted, regardless if the scanner is near you the radio signal has still been broadcasted and therefore is still all around you......I think your safe!

scanners don't transmitt. I wouldn't worry unless you are several feet from 50 watts or more transmitter. handheld radios that transmit only go up to 5 watts.

5-watts at 800+MHz, and the antenna held near the head is not totally harmless.

Radios in general can be harmful. In the hands of someone who's susceptible, they tend to breed like rabits, and are known to drain savings and checking accounts.

Real Question?

Was this a truly serious question or is he yanking our chain?

The fact of the matter is, if the scanner is receiving the signal and you're hearing the audio from the scanner, that signal is IN THE AIR around you already, regardless of whether you had a scanner to "hear" it on.

Plus, just how many "other" signals are there that the scanner ISN'T set up to listen to passing through you. TV, AM/FM radio, your home microwave oven, the RF from your computer....The list just goes on and on.....

THOSE signals are probably what is really killing all of us !!!!

I'm more concerned about cataracts in my eyes than I am about brain cancer. I use a headset with my cellphone, so it stays a safe distance. At the power levels we're talking about, a few inches is sufficient. Aside from my previous tongue-in-cheek comment, a receiver is harmless. You're in far more danger of dropping it on your foot.

Not too far fetched considering that I once had a neighbor that moved from his home cause it was near high voltage overhead power lines because he believed there was a risk of alien abduction because he lived near them. I proceeded to laugh my ass off.....

Receivers pick up what is already going past or into the antenna.
They do not "attract" signals.

Proof or background data supporting your assertions?

VERY true.
I remember some early amps cells phones that were recalled due to RF radiation issues.

Recalled due to exceeding industry limits does not mean they were "unsafe".

You "KNOW" this?

How do you "KNOW" this.

As far as I have heard no one "KNOWS" this, and that is what leads to all the discussion as to what is safe and what is not.

I find it amazing how many people beleave radios can harm you. just think adout it for a minute, at any point in your day there may be 50 to 100 short wave signals, over 50 lowband , over 100 vhf, over 100, uhf , 5 to 15 tv stations , 20 - 30 radio stations. all of them with signal right where you stand. there may be as many as 10 trunking and paging systems with in 5 miles of you.
lets not forget about the deadly cell phones, there may be between 100 and 1000 within 1 mile of you, and 3 to 5 cell sites. heres one nobody and thought of yet, dont forget about your little bluetooth transmitter stuck in your ear.
when you get home try no to worry about your cordless phones, wireless keyboards, wireless internet, and other wireless toys you may have.
oh next time you are driving around you might see a cop shooting his radar gun at you.
he shoud not live to long , having a 3 watt portable radio on his side, a cell phone , between 1 and 3 mobile radios, radar, bluetooth, and maybe even a mobile wifi.
im really not trying to be an ass, i just think with all this rf going on , we would all be dead if it were as bad as some people would have you beleave.

The Radio waves that scanners receive are there - it doesn't matter if you have a scanner or not! It's no different than listening to (or not listening to) a car radio.

Low level radiation can indeed be harmful. No you aren't going to see the effects over days, weeks or months, over even years. Effects can take generations to manifest themselves by way of changes in genetic material.

If you don't believe that RF can be harmful, perhaps you should take some biology or physics classes.

There is virtually nothing we can do to protect ourselves from environmental radiation sources, so yes, most of the hype about RF is just that, hype. Of course, don't stand next to a 50,000 watt radio transmitters antenna.
