Can some help identify this noise I'm hearing?

Hello, I've been getting this presumably data tone of some sort lately and I get it on a few channels primarily at night. I can't seem to figure out what it is. Can anyone out there listen to my feed and see if they can identify the static/buzzing sounds? It happens about ever 5 min or so. Thanks. I have an audio file but can't figure out how to attach it on here.

*scratches head* I'm confused a little here. :) I can hear it on analog just can't decode it so that it's voice again. Or can't hear it at all? Cause I'm using a BCT15x analog scanner getting it.

Exactly, sorry should have clarified that haha yes its P25 that hasn't been converted back to actual voice. At least that's my fairly educated guess.

Okay, that makes more sense! LOL Well I thought I was safe from digi for a while but it appears that it's starting to infiltrate my listening area. *sigh* Now I have to go spend MORE money and buy myself a new toy! hahaha. It'll be a while before that happens though. Thanks for all your help.

Any receiver tuned to the frequency will "hear" the noise of the data streaming, but analog devices won't know what to do with the digital data. Same thing as if you tuned to a trunked system control channel, or a VHF paging frequency, you'd only hear noise.

I just listened to your feed archives from a little while ago and heard it. It's definitely digital and/or encryption. Which frequency/agency in your scanlist is it occurring on? Maybe we can figure out exactly what it is based on that.

I'm hearing it on a few channels... I haven't made a note of the actually channels... I will pay attention for a few minutes and write them down and post here.

Well... It has apparently stopped for the time being. It hasn't picked up on that for a while now.

Are any of the ham repeaters P-25, or, D-Star in your area? That will cause the same noise on analog. Anyone switching to NEXEDGE, or, Mototrbo? Same kind of noise. Maybe SO for sensitive ops.

The 2 channels that I have been able to catch it on are 154.830 & 159.015 not getting a tone on either. Seems only to happen at night, during the day there is normal traffic on these channels. Now I'm not sure if I'm actually getting this from Marion county or somewhere else. I'm guessing somewhere else up to 2 counties away based upon what my typical listening distance is. This was the sound tonight which was different from last nights. I should clarify tonight tones were on 159.015 and last night's was on 154.830.

Not to my knowledge. I am a HAM at the most very basic you can get (tech). I try and keep up with the local repeaters in the area, but I only use my radio when I'm out mobile spotting during sever weather and I use the radio to contact NWS when that is available to me. I used to use it a lot more but my friend moved to a different state and that was when I was just getting started and never have really met or made any new friends in the HAM area.

I don't know what that is but I can tell you it's not P25.

Yeah I agree this is completely different from the sample i listened to last night. I couldn't get a file attached of last nights I will continue monitoring for it and when I hear the other (P25) I'll get that attached also it can also be heard in my archives late evening I think it was going on around 11ish.

Lucas County, near you, shows a license (listed for the Road Dept.) that has a MOTOTRBO emission code, 7K60FXD. They also have 154.830, showing on the database page, as the "old" Sheriff's dispatch. That license does not show a MOTOTRBO emission code, and not showing a pending modification as yet, but it wouldn't be the first time somebody made a move without waiting for approval.

A few of you have mentioned their emission code. How do you know what those are? I guess I'm clueless as to how your are coming up with this info. Sounds like I could be answering a lot of my own questions with this little tidbit of knowledge, not that I don't want anybodies help. Just don't want to be wasting anybodies time. I do appreciate all the help though. Thanks!

There's one list of them in the Wiki.

What I did, simply, was a database search, for users in your state, near your county (geographically, so that they might be in range). licensed for one of the frequencies that you were getting the possible "noise" on. Then, I looked at the license links for those agencies, to see if any were showing MOTOTRBO or NEXEDGE emission codes.

I have one group of cities near me that recently converted over to NEXEDGE, and there are a number of business systems using MOTOTRBO. The Ballpark in Arlington (home of the Texas Rangers baseball team) has apparently recently converted to TRBO. The license update is showing up this week. On the FCC page, click on the tab for "Frequencies", then click on an individual frequency. That will show you what emissions codes are licensed.

Same with me, what I heard before was P25, I had no digital scanner for a long time, I know what it sounds like. The file is something totally different.
