I want to replace the text on the welcome screen on my pro96 but dont have win96 (no key). Does anyone have a trick for that? Thanks.
can the welcome screen be changed w/o win96?

The only thing you can change without the software is the 4th line. To change the other three lines you have to have software.

Win96 has a 30 day free trial, so you can download it and change the text, as well as see if the software is worth the asking price for it.
I think you will find that it is worth the money and decide to buy it, if not then you will have invested nothing but your time.
Don't use pirated serial numbers, it is not fair to the developers of the software who invested time, effort and money to make this available to you at a reasonable cost. The nice thing about the 30 day trial method is it allows you full access to the application for a period of time so you can decide whether to spend the money.
WIN96 is a great program that makes programming the PRO96 easy. I was sold on it after using the free WIN95, before that I had sworn off Radio Shack scanners since they were hard to program compared to the Unidens of the time.
