I am not from canada but take this warning, They have some funny ideas about handguns and radar detectors compared to the USA, No disrespect intended but be wary of either in your car. I know nothing about their laws for scanners but I wanted to mention this. Good luck and have a great trip.

French/english or english only? I sort of assume the latter but
could be wrong...

You could use MapQuest, Maplblast etc. to get the surrounding
area figured out, then check in the database here. I don't live in
the area so can offer limited advice, but will have a look myself.

Yea funny ideas we don't let foreigners bring guns into our country who would have imagined, By the way try bringing a handguns into the States from Canada (without a BATF form 7) you won't get very far through US Customs either. If you have a reason to bring a gun into Canada you can get proper forms that will allow you to bring guns into the country (both handguns and long guns). You will not be permitted to carry in Canada, but really there isn't much reason to.

You might want to find some other things to listen to as well I doubt that the Compton Fire Dept. will be that busy in a town of 23,000 people.

1. I don't usually carry weapons - there not really the tools of a paramedic.
2. Thank you all so far, I intend to listen to everything in range while we are there.

I believe the Quebec Provincial Police are in the 160 to 170 MHz range. You might try and scan that range also. Hope you speak and understand French as most if not all communications will be in French no doubt.

The SQ (Surite de Quebec) repeaters are generally in the range
166.500 to 167.340 (a few outside including 153/154MHz around
Montreal). Check the conventional database here, there's an extensive
listing.

I find even with rudamentry french, it can be interesting to
listen to. They use some encryption (audio sounds like white noise).

Hello,

I poked around and found some interesting information.

Here are some maps of the SQ districts.
http://www.suretequebec.gouv.qc.ca/accueil/geomatique.html
As you can see only Sherbrooke and Magog have Municipal Police. For Compton it is the SQ out of Coaticook.

I had problems finding links for Fire and Rescue as my extensive 20 word knowledge of French did not help.

A list of Search and Rescue groups in the Area
https://www.nss.gc.ca/sar_directory/orgsByRegion_e.asp?region=89

There is a public safety site for Quebec that does seem to have a list of Fire Services
http://www.msp.gouv.qc.ca/incendie/sidq/index_en.asp?region=05

Brush up on your french. I dont think that you wil hea much i n the way of Englih out there although the region's real name is Eastern Townships, i.e. an english word in an area that was at one time had a huge English majority population.
While there are hamlets and village that are Anglo enclaves the bulk of services over the air are en francais.

If Compton is close to the U.S. border you might pull in some signals and hear English again,

bonne chance

Be aware that EMS is not often a Fire Service function in Quebec, though many firefighters (or even maybe most these days) have roughly the equivalent of EMT-B training.

I looked at Google Earth and Compton is just south of Sherbrooke, a merged city of 141k folks which includes the old Sherbrooke and the former towns of Ascot, Bromptonville, Deauville, Fleurimont, Lennoxville, Rock Forest, and Saint-Élie-d'Orford. Merging municipalities is one of the few things Quebecers have copied from Ontarians. :)

Contrary to the imaginings of many who've never been east of Cornwall, there are a fair number of anglos in the area where you'll be, though I doubt you'll hear much on the radio.

Other that that, I got nothing beyond what's listed under Quebec in the database. Montreal and Quebec City have large TRSs, so it would not surprise me to find that Sherbrooke had one as well.

Well, we made it back from our trip- and I have to say it was beautiful! Aside from the constant rain, the scenery was very refreshing to someone from the mid-atlantic. I managed to use a variety of ''service" and "custom" searches to hear a mix of English & French transmissions, but the weather kept it pretty quiet. I managed to visit the fire station in Lennoxville, and traded them for my company patch. I'll have to go back north again soon, but now I have to get used to seeing "STOP" instead of "ARRET" on those red octagonal signs!

Heck, I could barely figure out what they were saying, forget about who was saying it! BTW, Sherbrooke Fire was using MA/COM radios.

10-codes

If Sherbrooke's FD is like Montreal's, it could be easier than you think. Montreal's FD is very consistent in their use of 10-codes so if you can count to 100 in French, you can pick up most of what they are saying. The Montreal code, among other things, can be found at http://www.haya.qc.ca/fire/
