The armed forces are commencing training in my area in Port Hawkesbury, I was wondering what frequencies I could try and scan to pick up any kind of radio communication

Well the answer might be in a thread I just posted about traffic on 30.5 MHz. It would account for why Ireland was hearing it so well.
