Does anyone know what frequency the trappers and hunting / fishing lodges use in British Colunbia? I was at a trappers cabin in remote BC and noted an SSB radio and a wire dipole. He stated he was on the "Trappers' Net" and rattled of a frequency in the 4.5 mhz range. Does anyone have the actually frequency (ies).

Thanks

Joe

Yukon trappers 4441

Hi group;

I live in Juneau, Alaska and listen to this group often around 0200 utc when they have roll call for all the remote trappers, traffic passed is usually weather forecasts and help with technical problems and logistics of remote living. Call signs are mostly geographic areas ie. Watson lake, jack pine, king salmon etc. Some of these guys are running power and big loops so if conditions are good you should be able to hear them in the west us.

Fun group to listen to.

How does this work for them? Are they using low antennas for NVIS operation or are they just kind of line of site from peak to peak?

Their using nvis, the Yukon is big and most stations are hundreds of miles apart. Many of the trappers in the field use a portable radio built by spillsbury of Canada, the model is sbx-11a and is a 4 channel 10 watt radio that operates on a bunch of d cells. I own one on ham freq's and it's one of the finest radios ever made! More info on these YT trappers google the happy trappers blog.

I have a blast with my Elecraft KX3 running 5 to 10W and an end fed PAR 40-20-10m antenna. I just toss the wire in a tree and on 40m it talks to anyone I can hear within a few hundred miles during the day on 40m. I also use a portable ZS6BKW dipole but it takes more effort to put up so I'm working on an end fed for 80m that will also do 40m and maybe 20m

Hey MaleBovine, get out there with your new QRP radio and make some contacts!

Interesting they can do that with only 10 watts, that's just neat as heck.
