I own a Radioshack Pro-75, i live in river edge which is a town in tri borough south fire freq along with oradell and new milford,(all towns in bergen county next to paramus), i can hear all of the beginning of a call (location, truck rollout, truck position). But after that my scanner goes silent. For some reason i am not recieving fireground (155.0400). Is there any reason why i cannot recieve it? Also i would like to get a scanner with pl's can you recommend a good one with 200 channels? Thank

How far are you from the fires?

They are probably using simplex on teh scene and it is just too far for you to hear.

What type of antenna do you have?
What type of cable? and how much?

It would defintely help if you were listening on the right freq; 155.04 is a DPW freq, according to bergenscanner. The correct fireground freq - which is likely to be very low power, so you'll need to be close to hear it - is 155.145.

There's an extremely active NNJ scanning egroup on Yahoo (called nnj-scan) where you can get tips and corrections on freqs, antennas, ect. (not to ignore this forum, of course).

Have you checked to make sure you weren't using a PL code on that frequency? Perhaps you dialed in the wrong PL code for it? I've done it a few times myself. It was one of those Duh moments.

I used to be part of Tri-Boro South, and here is how it used to be... Each town has there own fire ground, New Milford should be 153.815 with a PL of 107.2. I believe the only time they use 155.145 is for a Tri-Boro response. As for New Milford, River Edge and Oradell, their radio systems are set very low. You have trouble hearing them calling in service on dispatch (154.16) if you aren’t on the same side of town as the unit. We used to laugh, because you get a town like Rutherford on the same frequency, and they blow you out of the water. Their system is so powerful and clear, they have cut out communication in the north part of Bergen County. I know some towns have complained in the past.

Hi Melting Plastic (?) and all,

154.1600 LAO 20330209; RIVER EDGE BOROUGH OF
154.2800 LAO 20330209; RIVER EDGE BOROUGH OF
154.6800 RIVER EDGE BOROUGH OF
155.0100 RIVER EDGE BOROUGH OF
155.0400 RIVER EDGE BOROUGH OF
155.1450 RIVER EDGE BOROUGH OF
155.4750 RIVER EDGE BOROUGH OF

One of them must be what you're not listening to. If all else fails ask your friend what frequency he hears them on. (;->)
