Canton was on 6.25khz NXDN and I was decoding them for a little while now. Sounded good.
Sometime last week a heartbeat signal appeared on a few of their frequencies that would transmit every 10 seconds and my radio stopped decoding them. It sounds like they've switched to 12.5khz NXDN and are on some kind of trunking system. Does anyone know what they did? Someone said they turned on the big E but they did more than just that. Just curious.

The ULS doesn't show any changes (yet)

The city of Canton, is licensed for a NXDN trunked radio system on the following frequencies:

• 151.11500
• 151.16750
• 151.42250
• 151.46750

They recently removed the old analog emission designators, and added NEXEDGE voice to these aforementioned frequencies. Moreover, the city amended one of their other VHF-High band frequencies of 155.085 MHz. to also include NEXEDGE emissions. This frequency can also be added to the trunking system if desired.

Hi Ron, I know they were on NXDN. I was decoding them on an Icom on those frequencis but some new recent changes have made that impossible. This is the first I'm hearing about an LTR system but you're right the license (that I couldn't find on the ULS) would indicate that's the case. Someone else I know who has a kenwood which will decode 12.5khz said he can't hear them either and said they went encrypted but I think they just need to reprogram their radio first and then see if it still doesn't come in. Thanks for your input. We're getting closer to finding out what it takes to monitor Canton. (if anything)

Many departments use the built in voice scrambler that is standard on the radios. I was reading somewhere that it is not difficult to crack the code for that. If anyone knows, please post.

Are you talking about analogue voice scrambler or the digital encryption they refer to as scramblers?
I really don't think that's what it is. If I had to guess I'd say they went from conventional to trunked and to do that, they changed it to 12.5 which made it unmonitorable for me with an icom and unmonitorable for anyone else with a kenwood radio not set to 12.5 and to top it off, it might require authentication.

If I remember correctly even the encryption is crackable since it only has 64000 available keys. I don't remember the procedure. The analog is just inherent to the radio. Authentication for trunking you're out of luck unless you know someone on the agency that give you access to the radio for cloning, then program receive only and the authentication will be undetectable. Again, this only works on Kenwood with 12.5.

On Kenwood Nexedge radios, it is not possible to monitor an NXDN TRUNKED system even programming a Kenwood NXDN radio conventionally, the radio firmware detects the transmissions as being part of a networked NXDN system and will ignore them.

and yes, I've been to an NXDN training class put on by Kenwood themselves at Radio One in Norcross, GA last year. This came straight from the Kenwood reps themselves and was confirmed by trial and error.

Yes and no. If your radio is a clone and you can authenticate it once. You can then set to receive only and it will monitor trunked system.

One thing that I can say for certain is that it's no longer 6.25.

NoFear2005 claims that he can hear it after reprogramming his radio (he added another separate zone to compare) for 12.5 and driving closer in to Canton.

And I believe him.

Although they are definitely licensed for trunking ( WQLY866 ) and I have heard the data bursts every 10 seconds, but I haven't heard any control channel.
