As of today he is back into a Medicaly induced coma.

He won't take to being taken off the ventilator which isn't a good sign.

UPDATE: Chief Hawks improves, watches American Idol

http://www.thetimesherald.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080513/NEWS05/80513016

Capac Police Chief Raymond Hawks watched American Idol tonight with his wife, Vickie.

The chief, who is still considered in serious condition, was removed from the ventilator this morning and is breathing on his own.

“He’s fully conscious and very aware of what’s going on,” Kelly Cramer, a family friend and Capac resident, said, adding that the chief was very happy the ventilator was gone.

Because he is hooked up to oxygen through his trachea, Hawks can’t speak or eat yet, but Cramer said family members can see a major change in his mood.

Though the chief is visibly improving, he still is an intensive care patient and a prognosis of the chief’s condition has not yet been made.

The chief was shot in the line of duty April 16 and is being treated at Port Huron Hospital.
He was in a medically-induced coma for about three weeks before doctors brought him out early last week.

Capac resident Donald Burke was charged in the shooting.

Burke is scheduled to have a preliminary examination before St. Clair County District Judge John Monaghan at 9:30 a.m., May 27.

If convicted, Burke faces up to life in prison.

Capac Police Chief Raymond Hawks' tracheotomy tube was released today at Port Huron Hospital.

“He’s coming around in leaps and bounds here,” family friend Kelly Cramer said.

“Vickie (Hawks’ wife) actually got a call from the hospital this morning, and it was him. He said, ‘Hi honey,’” Cramer said.

As far as Hawks’ overall condition, Cramer said “he’s still in ICU and they have not told her yet (of any upgrade of condition).”

The chief is in great spirits, Cramer said. “It’s much more comfortable being off that ventilator,” she said.

“This is awesome."
