Less power consumption, longer battery life. The digital performs more efficiently and provides better coverage in most cases.

*IF* it is trunked then power consumption will go up and battery life will go down. 24/7 CC, and recievers ALWAYS on. Hence why some companies are producing crazy 4000mAh batteries due to much higher power draws.

If they are using federal grant money, there is usually a requirement that any equipment purchased must be P25 capable. It doesn't mean they have to use it in that mode, but often this is ignored.

The other issue is that the sales guys will often promise wonderful things about digital radio. Politicians, who often are the ones that make the decisions, usually buy this hook, line and sinker.

Cape May Co.

First, we are NOT going digital or trunked system. This was an experiment by the pros. office and the some at the county oem. There are no plans to have any FD, EMS or PD on this system. Most likely this system will fall on its face do to grant money running out. As for the VHF it does work great. Cape May is in the process of changing repeaters to motorola, and lower twp fire is also in the process of making some changes. If the county wanted to spend money they should have gone to central dispatch for FD instead of "trying and experimental system."

I'm actually seeing a handful of TRBO usage in Cape May County now (notably Stone Harbor's tactical channel and Upper Twp Ops / DPW) with a handful of other non-TRBO users carrying TRBO radios.

Naturally, I have seen no activity on the trunking system other than control channel activity. However, in looking at the license (WQP769), I see that every frequency has an emission designator of 7K60FXW attached to it, which (I believe) is used for TRBO data & voice (thought it could be for other modulations as well). Any word on a TRBO roll-out for systems countywide as they require replacement?

I agree with you 100%: VHF works great for Cape May County and they should stick with it.

What is the latest with Cape May County and the P25 system. Is the system going to be used by anyone?

Received a submission indicating the "experiment" with this system has drawn to a close, and it's no longer operational.

It's been set to Deprecated status, here is the link to the system for anyone interested since it will no longer be accessible through the normal database.
