The scanner interest group of the Schenectady Museum Amateur Radio Association (SMARA) is being formed. We are affiliated with SMARA, but membership in the ham club is not required for meeting participation. We are working to establish a plan for upcoming meetings and activities.

We have been meeting on SMARA's meeting night, the third Thursday of every month. This time conflicts with other radio club meetings and activities. The Schenectady Museum site is not scanner-friendly, either. Meetings are normally held in the basement, and the only thing that can be received there is usually the Schenectady FD. It makes putting on demonstrations almost impossible.

We would like to hear from capital area scanner users who are interested in joining a local scanner club. At this point, there are three questions we would like you to answer for us:

1) What meeting days and times are best for you? Please give more than one option.

2) What would you like to see happening at meetings - presentations, social chatter, demos, show-and-tell, swap meets, or... ? Please be specific about program or demo ideas. If you would like to make a presentation to the group, we definitely want to hear from you!

3) What communications facilities in the region would you like to tour? If you are able to help in arranging tours of a particular place, please let us know.

You may reply to this message via this forum or group, or by direct email to dave at NF2G dot com.

This sounds like a great idea! I would go to the SAMARA meetings; but, I work Thursday nights...
I am very interested in a scanner specific group. Monday, Friday and Sunday nights currently work for me.

I may be able to get tours of Albany, Bethlehem (Communications) and COMSEC set up if people were interested.

My perception right now is that, as scanning is a passive hobby, people who are involved in it are also largely passive. We can get people to come to meetings and to see arranged programs, but very few actually volunteer to do anything. I still get more regular "participation" on my website from people sending data than we have been able to induce with a real world scanner club.

I hope the situation improves. So far, I have sent the above query to three distinct groups of potentially interested people and received four responses.
