That would actually be Madison and since I'm a long distance from there, someone locally will have to give you more details. MANY years ago, the State Capitol was under the police jurisdiction of the Department of Administration, Special Services - however, that may have changed.

Yes they are in Milwaukee downtown at the WI State Office Building. They also are responsible for places like probation/parole, State Fair Park, Waukesha State Office Building, Milwaukee Crime Lab,etc.

As far as dispatch, they are dispatched though the Capitol PD comm center in Madison. I was told that it was considered land line. I really don't know how it works but I do know that it comes in crystal clear in Madison.

I'm sure their radios also have the same 4 channels that Madison uses. 453.425 is patrol main and 453.525 is considered channel 3 for special events/security. Channels 2 and 4 are talkaround channels for 1 and 3.

Capitol PD has state wide jurisdiction and arrest powers.

Here is a link to a pretty minimal website http://www.doa.state.wi.us/section_detail.asp?linkcatid=55

Capitol also handles the Lottery building in Milwaukee. There are only a handful of full time officers (~40) spread through the state, so don't expect too much chatter. They provided protection for the Governor for a while after taking it away from the State Patrol when Thompson left, but once again WSP is charged with that detail. Tommy had a hand picked crew from WSP that got along pretty well, but somehow that changed when the admistrations switched. I'm sure Capitol is still handing othe security tasks in and around Madison, but not the Governor.

Actually Capitol still does dignitary protection for Doyle. They still do all the protection at the executive residence, governor's office, etc. They also help the troopers out a lot in the Milwaukee area with Doyle when he is there. Read a little here from the press release put out by State Patrol.

Capitol is still doing all the driving duties for the first lady and other VIP's.

Capitol PD is finally filling some positions the first time in a number of years. We've had something like 15 officers retire and they have not been filled. Similar to State Patrol with not being able to fill positions until now. As you know they are running an academy class right now that's less than 20 new recruits.

Yeah we had all the driving duties up until just over a year ago when JD handpicked 3 troopers to take over driving duties. Also they somehow promoted them to positions that didn't exist and didn't have any openings -- 2 sgt and 1 LT position.

The troopers came in to the loop when the Capitol/Trooper merger started. We were stuck having to go to Fort McCoy for trooper inservice. But the merger died because it made no sense the way they had it set up.

Actually, I heard someone mention that in the past. I don't know if there was any truth to it or not. It was probably more like "water cooler" talk.

Meanwhile, the gov's son get's arrested for OWI this past winter. Another field sobriety refusal.

Honestly I deal with both the AG and the gov's son on a regular basis and they both seem to be pretty nice people. That doesn't mean they have made the best decisons in life :)

Don't lump all of WSP in with the WLEA...not everyone is on board with that move, but that's another story. The WLEA union leader put out that memo, but it happens that he works for WSP.

I figured as much, since 3 guys can't be everywhere all the time.

Glad you heard how the class was doing, since they won't tell us...too many chances for rumors and whatnot. *rolls eyes*

JD picked the troopers? News to me, but I guess it makes sense. Those raises are insane, though. I also agree that the Capitol/WSP merger was designed poorly and bound to fail. Beyond that, I didn't really have an opinion.
